    Job Summary

    Responsible for the development of strategic plans and positions that address key NERC policy issues that impact American Electric Power’s (“AEP”) businesses. Direct engagement in a wide range of matters before NERC is prominent, but this role also involves engagement with AEP’s Federal Affairs team to assess and influence federal legislation and activities of other federal agencies such as the DOE and FERC as they relate to NERC.

     

    Responsible for understanding and communicating the implication of NERC policy issues and actions on AEP’s positions and initiatives at the RTO and state levels. As such, the individual will work closely with colleagues across AEP’s departments, operating company and regulatory leadership in the development of the strategic plans and policy positions as well as working with stakeholders within and outside the AEP footprint. Responsible for participating in AEP’s engagement in industry advocacy groups, such as the Edison Electric Institute (“EEI”), WIRES and American Clean Power Association (“ACP”), to drive alignment between AEP’s positions and the advocacy activities of these groups. Similarly, responsible for representing AEP in engagements with other utilities and stakeholders in joint advocacy initiatives around key issues.

     

    The Director will work with the Senior Vice President Federal Affairs and the Federal Affairs and internal NERC compliance teams, as well as the AEP Transmission organization, to represent AEP and its operating companies both internally and externally. Internally, the Director will coordinate with internal subject matter experts and proactively develop policies and strategies beneficial to the company on NERC related matters. The Director will work as a part of the Federal Affairs team to liaise internally with relevant policy teams to convey a consistent message to NERC staff and officials. The Director will also contribute to stakeholder engagement opportunities within the Federal Affairs team, such as providing policy briefs to members of Congress and federal branch officials

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

    + Help develop, organize and implement corporate policy and strategy for overall effective federal representation by working internally to develop policy positions on priority issue areas.

    + Be responsive to requests from NERC and other federal government officials by working internally with relevant policy teams to develop positions on priority issue areas.

    + Be responsive to internal AEP requests and maintain strong working relationships with internal colleagues.

    + Demonstrate the highest standards of ethical behavior and support the company's Corporate Compliance Policy.

    + Prepare reports on NERC and other reliability-related activity in Washington, D.C., while gathering and helping to interpret all legislative and government information that might impact corporate business.

    + Develop and maintain a broad base of knowledge regarding reliability-related policies that are beneficial to the company.

    + Represent the company in a professional manner before Congress, regulatory agencies, trade associations (e.g., EEI, Nuclear Energy Institute, Business Roundtable, ACP), ad hoc legislative, regulatory focused groups and public policy organizations.

    + Assume other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    **Education** :

    + Bachelor's degree required.

    + Master's degree or JD highly desired.

    **Work Experience** :

    + Strong preference for a candidate who has worked at NERC.

    + Minimum of 10-years of energy industry experience.

    + Detailed knowledge and understanding of NERC, and established relationships highly desired.

    OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

    + Ability to effectively interface with senior and executive-level stakeholders is required.

    + Willing to travel 15-25%

    + Strong analytical, oral and written communication and presentation skills are required.

    + Self-starter and high sense of urgency is required.

    + The ability to work long hours when needed is required.

    + The individual must possess the ability to keep commercially sensitive items confidential.

    + The individual must possess a proactive mentality and a positive attitude.

    + Position requires in-office attendance five days a week.

    Compensation Grade:

    SP20-011

    Compensation Range:

    $155,761.00-202,490.50 USD

     

    The Physical Demand Level for this job is: S – Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally (Occasionally: activity or condition exists up to 1/3 of the time) and/or a negligible amount of force frequently. (Frequently: activity or condition exists from 1/3 to 2/3 of the time) to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally, and all other sedentary criteria are met.
