    Job Summary

    The Automotive Technology Program is looking for a part time Automotive Technology Lab Assistant to join their team on Hawkeye Community College’s main campus. This position is responsible for monitoring compliance with program safety requirements, assisting instructors with student supervision, lab activities and training as well as assisting with the preparation and organization of automotive lab activities.

    Essential Job Functions

    Important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

    + Assists instructors in either classroom and/or laboratory settings.

    + Responsible for the preparation, maintenance and organization of equipment and materials as needed for student learning.

    + Test new equipment for quality and accuracy.

    + Assists faculty in routinely testing equipment and replacing items as needed.

    + Assist students as they conduct laboratory work.

    + Provide tutoring/supplemental instruction on an as needed basis.

    + Updates lab inventories and communicate with the Program Director about deficiencies in inventory, place supply requisitions and orders, and help with lab supplies as directed.

    + Assists faculty in appropriate disposal of lab waste (i.e. hazardous chemicals).

    + Uses judgement to assess situations that may impact instruction or safety and notify the Program Director of any concerns.

    + Provides assistance in developing safety protocols to prevent unnecessary and accidental injuries.

    + Monitor instructional areas for safety conditions.

    + Operate motor vehicles for the purpose of conducting business.

    + Perform other duties as assigned.

    + Unless otherwise approved under Hawkeye’s remote work policy, regular on campus and/or onsite attendance is considered an essential function of the position.

    Minimum Qualifications

    + High school diploma or GED required.

    + One year of successful work experience in an automotive related filed.

    + Demonstrated knowledge and skill in performing laboratory procedures in an automotive lab.

    + Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and writing.

    + Demonstrated ability to update and maintain inventory and safety records.

    + Demonstrated ability to supervise students in the labs and prep areas.

    + Demonstrated ability to work with wide array of students, faculty, staff, and the general public.

    + Ability to demonstrate strong interpersonal communication.

    + Skilled in Microsoft Office Suite, Google applications, and video conferencing technology.

    + Demonstrated ability to execute organization and department policies and procedures.

    + Demonstrated ability to handle confidential/sensitive information with discretion.

    Preferred Qualifications

    + Associates degree in related field from an accredited college.

    + Experience leading or instructing students or co-workers.

     

    Working Conditions

     

    Anticipated schedule is 7:30am – 11:30am Monday-Friday during the Fall and Spring semesters.

     

    Work is performed either in or a combination of an office setting, classroom setting, and automotive lab environment. Requires good hand-eye coordination including visual acuity to use a keyboard and read technical information; arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp. Sit, stand, bend, lift and move frequently during working hours. During course of day, interact with students, faculty and staff in person, by telephone and computers.

     

    Employment Status

     

    Part time (20 hours/week or less) during Fall and Spring Semesters
