    **_The Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine_** **has an outstanding opportunity open for a** **_Temporary_** **Research Study Assistant** **in the Michaelsen Lab.** _This temporary position is slated to begin in June of 2025 and expected to run for a duration of Twelve Months._

     

    The Michaelsen Lab in the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine focuses on hardware and software developments that improve patient care and safety before, during, and after surgery. Our group is hiring a research study assistant to help carry out translational research projects. The ideal candidate will have a background in computer science, engineering, or data science, potentially with a future interest in attending graduate or medical school. This individual should be excited to learn new skills and be intellectually curious. The study assistant will participate in some combination of the following tasks (depending on the skills and interests of the applicant as well as the needs of the lab) under supervision from the principal investigator. Programming skills in R and Python are needed to be successful in this role.

     

    Position Responsibilities** **Data Entry and Analysis – 75%

    Under general supervision and guidance:

    • Analyzing data with traditional techniques and artificial intelligence (such as predicting patient recovery from neuromuscular blockade)

    • Assist with figure preparation and written descriptions of experiments (contributions of research study assistants are acknowledged with manuscript co-authorship)

    • Consult with the research team on appropriate management of data collection/entry problems and concerns.

    Screening and Consenting Patients – 10%

    • Obtaining patient consent for research studies and performing these studies in the operating room and intensive care units under the supervision of an anesthesiologist.

    • Ensure that subjects meet all inclusion and exclusion criteria, following the specific protocol compliance.

    Research Administration – 15%

    • Assist with figure preparation and written descriptions of experiments (contributions of research study assistants are acknowledged with manuscript co-authorship)

    • Constructing medical devices for use in the operating room (such as alarm systems, head-mounted cameras, or monitors for neuromuscular blockade).

    • Assist in working with medical and undergraduate students on short-term research rotations.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Two years of college-level course work in a relevant academic area and one year of appropriate experience or equivalent education/experience.

    Other Required Qualifications:

    • Proficiency with R and Python

    • Ability to pick up new systems quickly

    • Ability to work well independently and within a team

    • Ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing

    • Organized and attentive to detail

    Desirable Qualifications

    • Experience with database management, data analysis, and presentation is desired.
