    Job Summary

    The College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA), the Department of Curriculum Support, andThe Program on Intergroup Relations (https://igr.umich.edu/) at the University of Michigan invite applications for a Lecturer I position at 33.33% effort for the Fall Term 2025 to teach one section of ALA228. This appointment is scheduled to begin on August 25, 2025, and end on December 31, 2025.

    Course Description

    ALA 228, Conflict and Coexistence, offered byThe Program on Intergroup Relations (https://igr.umich.edu/) , is a 3-credit course housed within the Applied Liberal Arts (ALA) division of Undergraduate Education in LSA. The lecturer will provide classroom instruction to undergraduate students in a social justice education and interdisciplinary liberal arts program. Lecturers are expected to prepare for class, attend course meetings, hold office hours, and handle routine matters related to instruction, including timely feedback on student work.

    Course Title:

    1 Section of: ALA 228: Intergroup Conflict and Coexistence

    Course Objectives:

    This course will examine examples of social conflict based on religion, ethnicity and culture. The course will provide an overview of interdisciplinary theories that help to understand the nature of such conflict (gender, social identity, limited resources, psychological, neurological, communication, anthropological, political science, sociological), and will then review current coalition building and coexistence work among various religious, ethnic, and cultural groups. Conflict as a constructive tool for social change will be analyzed, and important examples of peace and coexistence work in higher education, community programs and NGOs will be examined (i.e. Oasis of Peace, Slifka Program, UN Difficult Dialogues, Peace Studies Program, etc.). Experiential activities will enhance learning about intergroup conflict and coexistence work. The class is taught in a seminar format with up to 20 students. The instructor provides some lecture formats, but the course is primarily engaged and experiential. For Fall 2025, the course will specifically be focused on the Israel and Palestine conflict. In this course, students will explore how our social identities and positionalities inform our understanding of contemporary issues on the ground in Palestine and Israel and the history of the region.

    Responsibilities*

    Duties of this LEO Lec I position are expected to include teaching, developing some course materials, evaluating and grading students, and holding regularly scheduled office hours. A typical full-time (100% effort) load for a LEO Lec I in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts is three courses per semester.

    Required Qualifications*

    + A terminal degree in Psychology, Education, Sociology, Social Work, or in a closely related field. A Ph.D. is preferred.

    + The candidate must have experience with teaching courses devoted to intergroup relations theory and dialogue pedagogy, as well as working with a variety of culturally and ethnically diverse populations.

    + The successful candidate is likely to have substantial experience in engaged pedagogy, social justice education, and experiential teaching.

    + Experience teaching content related to the Israel and Palestine conflict utilizing intergroup dialogue pedagogy

     

    The selection criteria used for this search is based on how the applicant's education and experience meets the required minimum qualifications for the position. Excellence in teaching and instruction will be the principal criteria used to select the successful candidate.

    Desired Qualifications*

    + Ph.D or Ed.D

    + Demonstrated success cultivating non-hierarchical, inclusive communities that foster a students' sense of belonging;

    + Demonstrated success leading a dialogic classroom environment;

    + Demonstrated commitment to a pedagogy of care, anti-racist pedagogy, inclusive teaching methods, and/or trauma-informed teaching.
