The Office of the General Counsel is seeking a motivated and mission-driven attorney with health care experience to provide support to the health care legal team at Stanford University. This position will support Stanford Health Care, Lucile Salter Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford, Stanford Health Care Tri-Valley, and the hospitals' medical foundations in regulatory, transactional and certain litigation matters. Reporting to the Deputy General Counsel for Health Care, this University Counsel role demands a high degree of adaptability, flexibility, and excellent client service. The ideal candidate will excel in managing competing interests and executing projects within a high-paced, demanding and cutting-edge environment.
Core Responsibilities:
+ Proactively identify and assess potential legal and reputational risk for clients and recommend practical, creative solutions.
+ Support Senior University Counsel(s) on the health care team through legal research, drafting memoranda, presentations, and certain board and corporate documents.
+ Lead on drafting, reviewing, and negotiating clinical services agreements and other health care-related transactions documents, including agreements between and among Stanford entities.
+ Handle and help the client(s) respond to relevant subpoenas and help senior attorneys on sensitive investigations. Assist with responses to attorney demand letters and patient complaints filed through state and federal agencies.
+ Draft environmental scans to inform the hospital boards about legal developments impacting Stanford Medicine.
+ Advise on financial assistance policies, debt collection policies, community health needs assessments and Form 990 reporting requirements.
+ Provide ongoing support to Stanford’s health care enterprise.
+ Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
+ Minimum of six (6) years of relevant experience in health law.
+ Experience with working on matters related to federal and state laws and regulations governing hospitals, health systems, and clinical service providers, including laws related to Stark and Anti-Kickback Statute compliance.
+ Experience with drafting and negotiating agreements (clinical or health care related agreements experience is preferred).
+ Experience in handling and responding to subpoenas.
+ Membership in the California Bar or another state’s Bar, with the ability to qualify as registered in-house counsel in California upon starting. California Bar membership is preferred.
+ Strong client service skills with a capacity to manage competing priorities and projects effectively.
+ Discretion, flexibility, excellent judgment and the ability to collaborate and manage a broad range of client needs in a dynamic academic environment.
+ Ability to work independently and collaboratively with outside counsel and staff attorneys.
+ The position requires residency in the Bay Area and in-office attendance three days per week.

_The expected salary range $201,000-248,000 per annum._
