    Job Description

    The NYC Department of Buildings is responsible for ensuring the safe and lawful use of buildings and properties by enforcing the NYC Construction Codes, Energy Code and Zoning Resolution.     This position assists a Chief Inspector and performs supervisory work in the inspection of equipment and devices, including passenger, freight and sidewalk elevators, escalators, dumbwaiters, wheelchair lifts, conveyers, personal hoists, and amusement devices for conformity with NYC Construction Codes, Department rules, other pertinent laws and rules, and approved plans and specifications.

     

    - Assists the Chief Inspector in conducting efficient and effective inspection work to attain target goals. Plans, directs, and coordinates the work of a team or unit.

     

    - Prepares work schedules and monitors outcomes of inspections.

     

    - Oversees and manages tracking and monitoring DOB NOW inspections for complaints, application tests, overdue inspections, Q/A inspections, audit, and under review inspections.

     

    - Assist in monitoring, assigning and reviewing of application signoffs, requests for signoff and review reports in DOB Build.

     

    - Ensures that inspections are conducted in accordance with New York City Construction Codes, Zoning Resolution and Department rules and regulations.

     

    - Confers with Architects, Engineers, and manufactures of equipment on interpretation of ordinances, standards, and codes.

     

    - May perform joint inspections, with inspectors and conduct special assignments with usual conditions encountered or mandated by operational requirements.

     

    - When conducting inspections in the field, responds to, reports and investigates accidents, incidents and complaints; issues violations, summonses and stop work orders; and verifies licenses of onsite workers. Studies drawings to obtain details for inspections.

     

    - Explains and enforces laws and rules relevant to the field.

     

    - Supervises, assigns, and evaluates the work of Supervising Inspectors.

     

    - Reviews inspection and accident reports as well as formulates and supervises the preparation of inhouse training.

     

    - Supervises the review, approval, and signoff of Acceptance Tests.

     

    - Responds to technical inquires from the general public concerning requirements of installation of elevators and address technical issues that arise pertaining to the NYC Building Code revision.

     

    - Prepares various periodic reports and evaluations; and tracks Q/A Compliance.

     

    - Represents the Department at meeting and conference with representatives from the public.

     

    - Investigates new devices and consult with manufactures, designers, and installers as with DOB technical staff.

     

    - Testifies as needed, including at ECB, depositions, and court.

     

    - May train subordinates in their duties.

     

    - May operate a motor vehicle in the performance of assigned duties.

    REMOTE WORK

    This position may be eligible for remote work up to 2 days per week, pursuant to the Remote Work Pilot Program.

    INSPECTOR (ELEVATORS) - 31624

    Qualifications

    1. Five years of full-time satisfactory experience in the actual assembly, installation, repair or design of elevators; as a maintenance elevator machinist with elevator manufacturers of recognized standing; as a maintenance elevator mechanic working on various standard makes of elevators; or as an inspector of the construction, alteration, maintenance, or safety of elevators; or

    2. Three years of experience as described in ”1” above, and two years of formal training or education in an accredited college, technical school or trade school in courses in or directly related to installation, repair or design of elevators; or

    3.Three years of experience as described in ”1” above, and sixty (60) credits towards a degree in applied mechanics, mechanical engineering, mechanical engineering technology, electrical engineering, or electrical engineering technology from an accredited college or university; or

    4. Completion of an apprentice program, a minimum of three years in length, in the maintenance elevator mechanic trade or elevator inspection and one of the following: (a) Two years of experience as described in “1” above; or (b) Two years of education as described in “2” above; or (c) 60 credits as described in “3” above; or

    5. A license as a professional engineer or registered architect issued pursuant to the New York State Education Law.

    6. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to “1,” “2,” “3,” or “4” above.

    7. To be eligible for placement to Assignment Level II, individuals other than licensed professional engineers or registered architects must have, after meeting the minimum requirements, at least one additional year of experience as described in “1” above.

    8. To be eligible for placement to Assignment Level III, individuals other than licensed professional engineers or registered architects must have, after meeting the requirements for Assignment Level II above, at least one year of experience as described in “1” above in a supervisory capacity.

    Salary Min: $ 78,908.00

     

    Salary Max: $ 90,744.00
