As a Phlebotomy Technician, you will float to various locations as needed. Many patients often find needles and the idea of having their blood drawn frightening, so you can help them feel at ease while obtaining all the required specimens. At Cleveland Clinic, you can also explore advanced positions, such as Lead Phlebotomist, Team Lead, Supervisor and Manager.
A caregiver in this position works varying shifts from 5:00AM - 11:30AM and 4:30AM - 12:00PM.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
+ Perform blood collection for extended care clients and provide service to their residents, (primarily geriatric).
+ Perform specimen processing and send-out tasks, such as accessioning and packaging for transport.
+ Follow proper protocol when collecting samples, such as introducing yourself, verifying patient identity, collecting specimens for all tests listed on the requisition, clarifying tests, labeling specimens, transporting and centrifuging.
+ Provide STAT, scheduled and routine orders.
+ Ensure all current demographic and insurance information is obtained and verified.
+ Check appropriate paperwork for each test, patient and/or client.
+ Complete and submit appropriate administrative paperwork, such as time and mileage reports.
+ Follow proper laboratory safety procedures.
+ Be flexible to work a varied schedule as required.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
+ High School Diploma or GED
+ One year of current Phlebotomy experience
+ Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) within three months of hire
+ A current, Valid Driver's License (VDL)
+ Clean criminal history
+ Experience and proficiency in blood collection from all patients
+ Experience in handling and transporting laboratory specimens, laboratory safety, medical terminology and laboratory waste management
+ Working knowledge of clinical laboratory and tests performed
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
+ Graduation certificate from a formal accredited Phlebotomy Program
+ Formal Phlebotomy Certification
+ Two years of current Phlebotomy experience

Physical Requirements:
+ Frequent standing and walking
+ Manual dexterity sufficient to manipulate blood drawing equipment and make measurements
+ Visual acuity including the ability to distinguish colors
+ Lifting objects up to 10 pounds
+ Occasionally carrying objects up to 20 pounds
+ Finger dexterity and eye hand coordination
+ Working irregular hours including On-call hours
+ Exposure to blood and body fluids, communicable diseases, chemicals, radiation, and repetitive motions
+ Pushing and pulling heavy objects
+ Reaching, bending, stooping and handling objects with hands and/or fingers
