    Department Summary:

    The vision of Head Start and Early Head Start is a noble one: “changing lives to change tomorrow.” Drake University Head Start and Early Head Start programs support the comprehensive development of children from birth to age 5, in classroom settings, home-based programming, and childcare partnership locations.

    Job Summary:

    This position is responsible for providing in-home, preschool instruction to children ages 3-5 and educating parents/guardians on early childhood development. The Home-Based Teacher is responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating early childhood, developmentally appropriate curriculum and practice and coaching parents/guardians on ensuring school readiness.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • B.S. or B.A. in Early Childhood Education or Elementary Education, or Early Childhood Special Education.

    • One year of experience in teaching preschool.

    • Ability to be insured by University's insurance carrier.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Early Childhood endorsement

    • Current teaching license with special education endorsement.

    • Head Start/Early Head Start experience.

    • Current driver's license

    • Bilingual

    Job Duties:

    + 35% - Conduct instruction by following lesson plan while adapting plan to meet individual learning styles. Use and model developmentally appropriate strategies that support child comfortability to verbalize feelings, question, explore, experiment and problem solve. Support children's social-emotional development. Document and monitor children's progress to evaluate appropriateness of curriculum to meet children's developmental needs. Create and maintain accurate, confidential reports and records within applicable regulations and performance standards. - (Essential)

    + 20% - Conduct research-based screening and assessment to determine child proficiency and to enhance parent knowledge in the identification of typical and non-typical child development. Possess knowledge around child development and learning including typical/non-typical growth trajectory in areas related to cognition and mental health. Travel for business purposes within service area. - (Essential)

    + 20% - Implement research-based curricula to enhance parent’s ability to foster appropriate learning environments and experiences in the home environment to promote their child’s school readiness skills. Using adult learning strategies and support for individual parent needs, provide education to enhance parent’s knowledge of child development and parenting skills. Support parents in the use of appropriate learning strategies to promote school readiness skills. Develop and maintain good communication while respecting confidentiality. Establish rapport and trust with parents, peers, supervisor, and support staff to respond to children's environmental needs. Ensure the coordination of health issues of child and family with designated nurse.5% Record Maintenance and Scheduling: Maintain strict confidentiality of all records and documents. Maintain department records, reports, and child files in a secure manner. Assist with scheduling family intake meetings. Other duties as assigned. - (Essential)

    + 10% - Evaluate parent-child relationship and interactions to determine individual education needs of the parent to support school readiness skills. Coach parents, using shared observation and reflection strategies, to help them become better observers of their children in the home and group setting. - (Essential)

    + 5% - Use technology to create and maintain accurate and confidential records and reports within applicable regulations and performance standards. Complete and file all documents within established guidelines. Develop and maintain professional communication while maintaining confidentiality. Maintain appropriate certifications and reliability in determined assessment and curriculum. Conduct initial and ongoing family home visits and socializations. - (Essential)

    + 5% - Follow Federal Head Start Program Performance Standards, state and local regulations, rules, and requirements compliance. Maintain strict confidentiality of all records and documents. Maintain department records and reports in a secure manner. Represent Drake University and Drake University Head Start in a professional manner. Treat clients, co-workers, staff, parents and community members with respect and civility, and ensure a safe and inclusive environment for everyone at all times. React to change productively, maintain prompt and regular attendance, and perform all other duties as assigned. Promote Head Start philosophy and initiatives. - (Essential)
