The Systems Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining the organization’s data center systems, including but not limited to virtualization infrastructure, servers, storage, Microsoft cloud, and related systems, ensuring optimal security, performance, and reliability. Working within the Information Technology department of a dynamic exploration and production oil and gas company, this role supports critical operational compute and infrastructure. The Systems Engineer’s primary focus includes safeguarding data, optimizing system efficiencies, and administering storage solutions, virtual hosts, and core business applications used across both the IT department and the broader organization. In doing so, this position helps maintain the integrity and continuity of mission-critical operations and enables the company to meet its business objectives.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities
+ Administer server virtualization solutions (e.g., VMware, Hyper-V) for on-premises and cloud/hybrid environments to support business-critical applications and services.
+ Administer Microsoft SQL Server including clustering, SQL back-ups, and general operational and stability maintenance
+ Oversee the Microsoft Active Directory stack and Microsoft 365/Azure Hybrid environment, including user account management, group policies, and identity/access controls.
+ Provide oversight and guidance for Veeam based back-up operations in partnership with 3rd party vendor, ensuring timely, accurate, and complete back-ups for all enterprise systems
+ Serve as an escalation point for the service desk, resolving advanced technical issues related to servers, storage, and infrastructure.
+ Implement and enforce cybersecurity best practices across all data center and cloud technology layers, proactively identifying and mitigating security vulnerabilities.
+ Coordinate and execute infrastructure projects to support ongoing E&P operations, collaborating with cross-functional teams to meet objectives and timelines.
Required Skills & Abilities
+ Must possess strong virtualization skills, particularly in VMware ESXi or similar platforms, including configuration, optimization, and troubleshooting.
+ Proficiency or the ability to effectively demonstrate proficiency with on-premises Active Directory Domain Services (e.g., DNS, DHCP, Group Policy) and Microsoft Entra/SharePoint in a hybrid cloud environment.
+ Demonstrated ability to manage, administer, and optimize Azure services alongside on-premises and cloud-based systems.
+ Demonstrated experience with storage administration, preferably IBM storage systems, including provisioning, maintenance, and lifecycle management of SAN/NAS environments.
+ Must be able to demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of hardware lifecycles for server, and storage solutions.
+ Ability to document system diagrams, procedures, and configurations using tools such as Visio, Word, and Excel.
+ Familiarity with server and application requirements for SCADA industrial control systems in an E&P environment is strongly preferred.
+ Must be able to serve as an escalation point for complex technical issues, collaborating effectively with service desk personnel and third-party vendors.
+ Must possess refined interpersonal verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to clearly convey technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
+ Must have the ability to be self-motivated and work independently with little to no supervision.
Education & Experience
+ Minimum 5 years of hands-on working experience with information systems in complex Enterprise environments required
+ 10 years of hands-on working experience with information systems in the Oil and Gas industry preferred
+ A bachelor’s degree in computer science or information systems, or equivalent related work experience required.
Language Skills
+ Fluent verbal and written skills in English.
Licences, Certificates, Registrations
+ Certifications such as VMWare VCP, Microsoft Windows Server, and Microsoft 365 Administrator preferred
Work Environment & Physical Demands
This job operates in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets. Physical demands include:
+ Prolonged periods of sitting and may need to routinely move around to communicate with different groups
+ Occasionally work late to meet business demands and to facilitate meetings with Tokyo office
+ Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
+ Must have a valid DL.
