    Salary: $24.50/Hour Minimum

    Report Times: 5:00am - 1:30pm / 9:30am - 6:00pm

    Daily Hours: 8.5 (7.5 Paid)

     

    Work Year: 52 Weeks

    Civil Service Title: Civil Service Title: Senior Automotive Mechanic

    Minimum Requirements:

    Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, plus EITHER:

    (A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate's degree in Automotive Mechanics, plus one (1) year of full-time or its part-time equivalent paid experience as an automotive mechanic or heavy equipment mechanic under the supervision of a journeyman level mechanic including diesel experience; OR,

     

    (B) Three (3) years of full-time or its part-time equivalent paid experience as a journeyman level automotive mechanic or heavy equipment mechanic including diesel experience; OR,

     

    (C) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).

     

    NOTE: Journeyman level experience refers to skilled mechanical work which would involve maintenance, repair, and rebuilding of all systems: brakes, suspension, cooling, exhaust, electrical, transmission and engine of vehicle equipment.

     

    Where education is below the minimum specified, additional experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

    Desired Qualifications:

    Thorough knowledge of hydraulics and diesel and gasoline engines;

     

    Good knowledge of State Department of Transportation rules and regulations governing the repair and maintenance of buses;

     

    Ability to diagnose problems of all systems, diesel engine, air brakes, and hydraulics;

     

    Possess valid CDL-B with PS Endorsement by the end of probationary period;

     

    Minimum of five years experience in school bus or heavy truck repairs and maintenance;

     

    Good knowledge of the principles of heavy equipment mechanics including systems and parts operations, systems and parts interrelationships, and systems and parts functions;

     

    Good knowledge of the methods and practices involved in repairs to heavy equipment;

     

    Good knowledge of shop equipment, tools, electronic diagnostic equipment, parts and their potential use;

     

    Working knowledge of the mechanical operation and terminology of school buses;

     

    Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervision, and District administration.

    Position Summary/Responsibilities:

    Performs heavy equipment and automotive repairs to gasoline, diesel engines, and hydraulic systems;

     

    Repairs and rebuilds all automotive systems such as cooling, electrical, exhaust, steering and suspension, fuel system, brake, and drive train;

     

    Repairs preventative maintenance functions including lubrication, fluid checks, minor tune-ups and safety inspections of trucks, buses, and other heavy equipment; Operates machine shop equipment such as grinder, drill presses and other working machine to make, rebuild or repair parts for automotive equipment;

     

    Diagnoses chronic automotive problems caused by maladjustments, worn, damaged, or defective parts;

     

    Performs New York State authorized inspections of all District owned vehicles;

     

    May be asked to drive a school bus with children on occasion;

     

    Other duties as assigned.
