    *SUMMARY *

     

    The primary purpose of the Safety Technician position is to provide to perform daily pick-up, transportation, segregation and processing of hazardous and radioactive materials. Performs monitoring surveys where radioactive materials are used or stored. Maintains all storage areas, equipment and personal protective equipment related to the safety programs. Responds to applicable emergency situations involving hazardous materials or fire and smoke incidents. Inspects and maintains fire protection equipment such as fire extinguishers, sprinkler systems, hood extinguishing systems and fire and smoke detection devices either internally or through services of outside contractors. Assists in conducting fire drills by providing instructions through the public address system. Adheres to institutional, state and federal regulations and guidelines when handling hazardous material or when exposed to hazardous situations. Prepares paperwork for maintaining state and federal agency. Must adhere to requirements of department and Emergency preparedness plans.

    Recognize, Evaluate, and Mitigate Hazards

    Supports the research and clinical use of unsealed radioactive material with timely completion of receipt inspections, documentation of receipt, and delivery to Authorized User. Further supports the use of unsealed radioactive material for research by participating in the Annual Laboratory Inspection Program.

     

    Supports the clinical use of unsealed sources of radioactive material by completing patient room clearances in a thorough and timely manner. Supports the clearance of rooms, equipment, and other items by performing contamination surveys procedures as required.

     

    Compliance

     

    Supports the proper disposal of radioactive waste at MD Anderson and all sub-site facilities by participating in the collection of these wastes, the documentation of these waste, and the disposal of these waste.

     

    Supports the proper posting of all radiological areas at MD Anderson and all sub-site facilities by participating in an annual review of these postings and through an understanding of the posting requirements for the various types of radioactive material and radiation producing machine present at MD Anderson.

    Program Support and Implantation

    Supports the research and clinical use of sealed sources of radioactive material with timely completion of receipt inspections, documentation of receipt, and delivery to Authorized User. Further supports the use of sealed sources of radioactive material by participating in the semi-annual physical inventory of sealed sources, the semi-annual leak check of sealed sources, and the quarterly interlock check of irradiators.

     

    Supports the use of radiation producing machines and laser for research and clinical uses by completing and documenting the semi-annual inventory of these devices.

     

    Supports the operations of the dosimetry program by issuing temporary dosimeters, distributing and collecting dosimeters. Provides further support in the dosimetry program by adding and deleting participants in the applicable software systems as needed.

     

    High school diploma or equivalent. One year of experience in environmental, health and/or safety programs. Class A, B or C valid Texas driver's license depending on the type and weight of vehicle to be operated and number of passengers to be carried and eligible to drive State and institutional vehicles.
