General Statement of Duties / Distinguishing Features of the Class
NON-CONFIRMED POLICE OFFICER TESTING PROCESS
**All applicants must complete the physical testing (MPAT) to advance to the interview portions of the process.** Testing information is below:
+ The Montana Physical Abilities Test (MPAT) will be conducted at the Butte Civic Center (1340 Harrison Avenue, Butte, MT 59701) on Monday, June 23, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. There will be a large Police Testing sign near the entrance for the annex.
+ The written test will be conducted at the Butte Archives (17 W. Quartz Street, Butte, MT 59701) on Monday, June 23, 2025, at 6:00 p.m.
After the above testing portion, two separate interviews will be conducted.** You will be notified if you are selected for an interview and will be informed where the interview will take place
+ The first interview will be conducted by the Police Commission and will take place on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, starting at 9:00 a.m. Location and Times will be announced after testing.
+ The second interviews will be conducted by the Law Enforcement Department on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, beginning at 1:00 p.m. Times will be announced after the first round of interviews.

This is responsible and difficult law enforcement work, which involves patrolling designated areas and enforcement of laws through detection and apprehension of law violators. Discretionary powers include whether to warn, issue citations or to arrest violators. This class is distinguished from that of Confirmed Police Officer by being the first step of a field training program to prepare for full Police Officer responsibilities within a prescribed time. The work is performed under the close supervision of the Field Training Officer, Assistant Shift Commander and Shift Commander but some leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative. Extensive backup and decision review support is provided by other department personnel. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain close cooperative working relationships with other law enforcement personnel, detention and court personnel, and the general public. Because the work involves enforcement of laws and dealing with violators of laws, the work involves an element of personal danger.
An employee in this class is required to maintain complete confidentiality on all matters pertaining to law enforcement operations, Law Enforcement Department personnel and the general public.
This position is covered under a Collective Bargaining Agreement between the City-County of Butte-Silver Bow and the Butte Police Protective Association.
Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)
+ Patrols an assigned area in order to prevent crime, traffic violations and accidents.
+ Apprehends individuals suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs and conducts appropriate tests.
+ Issues warnings and citations for non-moving and moving violations.
+ Places individuals under arrest, delivers Miranda warning, transports suspect, places suspect in detention and completes necessary paperwork.
+ Responds to burglar alarms, armed robberies, assaults, and other crimes in progress and answers general calls for service.
+ Provides information and assistance to motorists, pedestrians and the general public.
+ May operate patrol vehicles in high-speed emergency situations.
+ Negotiates with suspects until arrival of tactical units.
+ Mediates civil disputes such as domestic disturbances, landlord-tenant arguments and community complaints.
+ Secures crime scenes for investigation and the protection of evidence.
+ Conducts criminal investigations and interviews witnesses and interrogates suspects.
+ Responds to and controls disturbances of the peace, fights and other civil disturbances, including communicating with emotionally disturbed persons and restraining uncooperative individuals until tactical units arrive.
+ Serves warrants and summons.
+ Restrains, escorts and transports prisoners for court proceedings, and doctor, dental, psychiatric and other medical or necessary appointments.
+ Renders aid to the sick and injured and maintains personal safety.
+ Eliminates public hazards and preserves the public peace.
+ Prioritizes and manages time in order to address criminal and other law enforcement related problems.
+ Prepares clear and concise reports in accordance with established policies and procedures.
+ Attends meetings, conferences and workshops as requested and authorized.
+ Performs all duties and work assignments in a safe, healthy, and environmentally sound manner. Specifically, complies with the Health & Safety Program; maintain work area in a safe and orderly manner; identifies and reports unsafe conditions; reports all accidents; wears required personal protective equipment; and attends safety-related meetings, training sessions, fit testing, etc.
+ Performs all duties and work assignments in compliance with project quality requirements.
+ Acts responsibly and ethically, and in conformance with generally accepted business, occupational, and professional standards.

Required Experience, Training, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
+ Good knowledge of law enforcement policies, procedures and practices.
+ Good knowledge of investigative and patrol procedures and techniques.
+ Good knowledge of arrest procedures, prisoner restraint and transportation.
+ Good knowledge of evidence training development and delivery.
+ Good knowledge of traffic control measures.
+ Good knowledge of first aid and personnel safety procedures.
+ Skill in presenting information and evidence in court.
+ Ability to deal with people in sensitive and controversial situations.
+ Ability to handle potentially dangerous and hazardous situations.
+ Ability to function on a day-to-day basis with close supervision or assistance.
+ Ability to successfully complete officer candidate programs.
+ Ability to use and qualify to department standards for firearm expertise.
+ Ability to communicate well with the supervisor, other law enforcement, emergency response, detention and court personnel, and the general public both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language.
+ Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other City-County employees, supervisory personnel, law enforcement agencies, emergency response, detention and court personnel and the general public.
+ Ability to prepare accurate and reliable reports containing findings, problems, legal terminology.
+ Ability to operate a personal computer using word processing, spreadsheet and database applications appropriate to assigned duties.
+ Ability to use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions.
+ Ability to perform a wide variety of law enforcement tasks with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines and in an atmosphere of personal danger.
+ Ability to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology.

Acceptable Experience and Training
+ As established in 2.20.130 Butte-Silver Bow Municipal Code, and
+ Some experience in law enforcement preferred.
Required Special Qualifications
+ Possession of or the ability to obtain by time of appointment a valid driver's license issued by the State of Montana.
+ Able to pass tests administered by the Police Commission.
+ Able to complete Police Officer Standard Training.
+ Must be a resident of Butte-Silver Bow during employment according to Butte-Silver Bow Ordinance. See below.
"2.08.010 Residence during employment. From and after October 1, 1979, all employees of the local government of Butte-Silver Bow shall be bona fide residents within the boundaries of Butte-Silver Bow during the period of their employment by the government of Butte-Silver Bow. (Ord. 85 § 1, 1979)"
