    Overview

     

    The **Pediatrics Nutrition Educator** provides state of the art nutrition education, in a variety of settings, to patients and their families/care-partners, helping to optimize their diabetes management. Participates in the development of education curricula and materials by writing original material and/or reviewing the work of others. Promotes and disseminates quality diabetes and nutrition information to professionals and the public following established Clinic Division guidelines. Collaborates with other educators in identifying needs, developing and providing clinical programs and services.

    Responsibilities

    Program Development and Implementation:

    + Attend appropriate Joslin Boston committee meetings to remain involved and active member of clinical and educational staff.

    + Participates in quality control/quality improvement activities within one’s scope of practice that promotes quality service.

    + Participates in the development and revision of educational materials and curricula.

    + Work in collaboration with staff in Boston to further develop, implement and oversee the dietetic intern diabetes rotations to help optimize their formal training in all areas of diabetes management.

    + Participate in Joslin diabetes educational activities for staff, patients, families, school nurses, etc.

    + Maintain up-to-date knowledge of diabetes technologies to participate in clinical and education activities

    Nutrition:

    + Provide state of the art nutrition/teaching education.

    + Applies accepted standards of care and education adopted by Joslin Clinic as indicated in Joslin Policy and Procedures to patients and their families/care-partners to help optimize diabetes management.

    + Maintains appropriate and accurate documentation in all areas, meeting standards and providing needed information for clinic and department evaluation and actions.

    + Documents and processes medical records, billing and statistical records according to Joslin Policy and Procedures.

    Pediatric Research Initiatives:

    + Works with the Coordinator of pediatric nutrition Education and Research and the Director of Pediatrics and the multi-disciplinary team to develop and implement research projects.

    Maintain professional growth and development:

    + Maintains professional registration and certification. Stays up to date on current thought and research in diabetes, diabetes management and behavior change strategies ensuring that Joslin Education Services as well as one’s professional services are consistent with the provision of state-of-the-art care.

    + Attend relevant conferences as staffing and budget allow.

    + Contributes to Center goals for outreach and increased visibility by maintaining active involvement in professional organizations (such as contributing to newsletters and articles, delivering lectures, and contributing to development and implementation of workshops.)

    Qualifications

    + Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition or Dietetics

    + At least 1 year experience in an inpatient setting. Outpatient counseling experience with pediatric patients with diabetes preferred

    + Registered with the American Dietetic Association;

    + Licensed in the state of MA

    + Certified Diabetes Educator required or must sit for the exam within six months of eligibility

    + Demonstrates competency in written and oral communication skills

    + Excellent organizational skills

    + Flexibility to adapt to changes in daily routine

    + Good public speaking skills

    + Self-directed
