    ASSISTANT COMMISSIONER (South & West Planning Regions)

    DEPARTMENT OF PLANNING & DEVELOPMENT

    Bureau of Planning & Design

     

    Number of Positions: 1

     

    (additional vacancies possible pending budget approval)

     

    Starting Salary: $118,128.00 – $133,524.00

     

    New hires are paid the starting rate. Current employees’ pay rate is determined by their job title and years of service

    Under direction, manages and supervises professional staff for multiple planning regions tasked with coordinating development projects and developing and implementing planning studies and initiatives to promote the comprehensive growth, revitalization, and sustainability of the city and its neighborhoods to encourage business and real estate development, as well as a diverse and stable housing stock; and performs related duties as required.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES

    **·** Leads and directs management level staff in developing new or revising existing program operations designed to improve or expand departmental services especially relating to redevelopment strategies and projects, long -range planning and land use analysis and recommendations, and land sales for market rate and missing middle infill housing development

    **·** Collaborates with other city departments, locally elected officials, community residents, non-profit organizations, government agencies, and private consultants on major planning studies, redevelopment projects, and policy initiatives

    **·** Ensures graphic materials and planning reports created or published by the bureau staff meet the department’s policies, city regulations, and standards as required

    **·** For complex planning initiatives, serves as the point of contact from inception through internal approvals, legislative approval, and implementation

    **·** Represents the department at City Council and Commission meetings, community meetings, civic and business organizations, and conferences to discuss planning activities and projects

    **·** Assists in reviewing staff performance against goals and objectives, staffing management, streamlining work processes, reporting development milestone pipelines, budget tracking for the bureau, and annual budget preparations

    **·** Assists professional planning staff to secure funds for planning initiatives such as applying for grants and assist with procurement and invoicing processes

    _Additional duties may be required for this position_

    **Location:** 121 N LaSalle Street, 10 th Floor

    **Days:** Monday – Friday

    **Hours:** 9:00am – 5:00pm

    THIS POSITION IS EXEMPT FROM THE CAREER SERVICE

    Qualifications:

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    • Nine (9) years of experience related to the responsibilities of the position, of which two (2) years are in a supervisory role related to the responsibilities of the position, **OR**

    • Graduation from an accredited college with an Associates degree in in a field related to the duties performed, plus seven (7) years of work experience related to the position, of which two (2) years are in a supervisory role related to the responsibilities of the position, **OR**

    • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in a field related to the duties performed, plus five (5) years of work experience related to the position, of which two (2) years are in a supervisory role related to the responsibilities of the position, **OR**

    • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master’s degree in in a field related to the duties performed, plus four (4) years of work experience related to the position, of which two (2) years are in a supervisory role related to the responsibilities of the position

    SELECTION REQUIREMENTS

    This position requires applicants to complete an interview which will include a skills assessment as part of the interview. The interviewed candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position, based on the oral and written parts of the interview will be selected.

    Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:

    • Master’s degree in Architecture, Urban Design, Urban Planning, or Landscape Architecture

    • Knowledge of Chicago’s south and west neighborhoods, zoning, design, and planning policies

    • Experience working with local elected officials and the development industry
