The Art Therapist is responsible for assisting in the emotional and mental rehabilitation or adaptation of an individual with a disability using art therapy skills and other creative modalities. As a member of the treatment team, under the direction of the psychiatrist and/or Operational/Clinical Manager, aid in the assessment, treatment and discharge planning of individuals with mental health needs. This position requires an ability to be creative; adaptable and make independent judgments. The art therapist serves as a case manager and coordinates the treatment for an assigned number of patients under the supervision of the psychiatrist and/or Operational/Clinical Manager.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Demonstrates competency in assessment; treatment modalities; growth and development; and communication appropriate to the age of patient population.
2. Provides structured art therapy /psychoeducational groups, individualized treatment programs and develops new programs. (IN COOPERATION WITH MANGER OF THERAPEUTIC SERVICES)
3. Provides psycho educational information to patients and their families AS NEEDED.
4. Collaborates in Interdisciplinary Treatment Team Meetings.
5. Facilitates daily therapeutic art groups and conducts art therapy sessions as appropriate. Provide psychoeducation through creative expression.
6. Represents allied therapy in various multidisciplinary meetings.
7. May be required to provide back-up for other department therapists during vacation periods or extended absences.
8. May be asked to participate in individual patient care meetings with multidisciplinary team members/patient and or family to evaluate progress and to identify and resolve problems that may interfere with a positive patient outcome.
9. Provides patient/family/staff education and advocacy as appropriate or requested.10. Maintains knowledge and awareness of mental health laws regarding patient's rights and voluntary/involuntary commitment proceedings, coordinating such proceedings with the necessary personnel.
11. Maintains appropriate, timely and effective communication with patients, families, physicians, nursing staff, department managers, ancillary departments and the Network Coordinator regarding variances, aspects of patient care management, and interpersonal issues with staff members of departments in order to facilitate a positive outcome for patients.
12. Attends department staff meetings and trainings relevant to position. Participates in activities which promote personal/professional development.
13. Complies with established chain of command. Demonstrates the ability to appropriately balance the need for supervision with the level of autonomous functioning expected as observed by the manager.
14. Maintains clinical records of all patient contact and clinical reviews, according to hospital policy and other regulatory guidelines (i.e., State, JCAHO).
15. Maintains confidentiality of all materials handled within the Network/ Entity as well as the proper release of information. 16. Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding issues of employee, patient and environmental safety and follows appropriate reporting requirements.17. Demonstrates/models the Network’s Service Excellence Standards of Performance in interactions with all customers.
18. Demonstrates Performance Improvement in the following areas as appropriate: Clinical Care/Outcomes, Customer/Service Improvement, Operational System/Process, and Safety.
19. Demonstrates financial responsibility and accountability through the effective and efficient use of resources in daily procedures, processes and practices.
20. Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding attendance and dress code.
21. Float between programs based on clinical need.22. Other related duties as assigned.
PHYSICIAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:
Sitting for up to 5 hours per day, 2 hours at a time. Standing for up to 1 hour per day, 1 hour at a time. Walking for up to 2 hours per day, 20 minutes at a time. Occasionally uses fingers to turn pages. Frequently uses hands to write, type, and hold charts. Rarely uses the hands or fingers for firm grasping or twisting/turning. Frequently uses upper extremities to lift and carry up to 10 pounds. Frequently stoops, occasionally squats, rarely reaches above shoulder level. Hearing as it relates to normal conversation in person or on telephone. Seeing as it relates to general vision, near vision, far vision, color vision, and peripheral vision.
EDUCATION:
Graduate of an accredited Art Therapy Master's program. Certification through the Board of Art Therapists.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
One (1) year previous experience in mental health setting preferred.
