Job Description
We are seeking a skilled and experienced attorney to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in providing legal advice on data privacy law in the U.S., including U.S. state privacy laws such as the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), in addition to familiarity with other privacy frameworks including the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and Canadian provincial privacy laws, and General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The position will report to the senior attorney responsible for coordination of the data privacy and cybersecurity legal team in North America and will require the ability to effectively manage numerous projects at the same time.
Core responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
+ Reviewing privacy laws and privacy notices
+ Reviewing, drafting and negotiating contract documents and data privacy agreements
+ Counseling on data breach investigations and incident response, including risk mitigation counseling
+ Working with legal and business teams to ensure compliance data privacy legal obligations
+ Providing data privacy legal advice, and other commercial support, for business units, including purchasing, sales and other commercial agreements, training and more
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications:
+ J.D. from a U.S. accredited law school
+ Member of Michigan bar in good standing or eligible for Michigan bar admission
+ Privacy certification such as CIPP/US, CIPP/E, CIPP/C, CIPM or CIPT
+ In-depth knowledge of regulatory frameworks for key U.S. federal and state privacy laws (including requirements of all effective and pending state consumer data privacy laws, GLBA, HIPAA)
+ Familiarity of PIPEDA, as well as Canadian provincial privacy laws, and GDPR
+ 3+ years of experience in a law firm or corporate environment
+ Some travel, both domestic and international, may be required, as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
+ Ability to collaborate with all levels of the organization and across regions
+ Excellent written and oral communication skills
+ Experience counseling on data breach and response
+ Experience drafting company terms of service and website privacy policies, as well as counseling on digital services and tracking technologies.
