Responsibilities
The Patient Account Representative will be responsible for registering patients and processing related paperwork. Duties include interviewing patients, preparing standard registration forms and performing other admission related tasks. May be expected to perform other clerical work.
JOB KNOWLEDGE
+ Verifies insurance benefits and obtains necessary information needed to submit claims to insurance companies. Obtains pre-certification or prior authorization, if required.
+ Prepares patient charts and enters patient information into computer.
+ Interviews patients, relatives or other responsible individuals to obtain identifying and biographical information. Interprets hospital regulations to patient concerning pre-operative requirements. Explains rates, charges, services, and hospital policies regarding payment of bills.
+ Makes copies of ID, insurance cards, etc.
+ Obtains signatures from patients for insurance filing and admission papers.
+ Collects monies due at time of admission and gives payments to appropriate personnel.
+ Answers telephones as needed.
+ Performs other miscellaneous secretarial duties as needed.
+ Learns all other aspects of billing, scheduling, etc., for optimal efficiency of the Business Office.
+ Performs all other duties assigned by supervisor.
SECONDARY POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
+ Back up PBX/Reception area and insurance verification.
Qualifications
Total Education, Vocational Training, and Experience:
+ High school diploma, business courses, English, typing.
+ Medical insurance filing/billing with knowledge of medical terminology.
+ Has strong medical terminology.
+ Has strong computer knowledge and skills.
+ Has strong typing skills.
License or Certification:
+ Possesses strong initiative to get daily work finished and processed.
+ Has ability to communicate effectively with patients, physicians, and other staff members.
+ Possesses accurate judgment especially handling insurance claims and dealing with patient accounts.
+ Versatile and willing to coordinate with and participate in, when necessary, all other aspects of the Business Office.
+ Is courteous, understanding and sympathetic toward patients, physicians, and others.
+ Participates in the Quality Improvement process and activities, including the areas of Safety, Physician Satisfaction, Documentation, Compliance with OSHA standards, and Risk Management.
