    Description of Work Unit

    The Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands ( CEMML ) is a research, education, and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at CSU . CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on the Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. We collaborate with our sponsors and other CSU departments to resolve complex environmental issues, leaving a legacy of science-based decisions that sustain our resources for future generations.

    If so, the CEMML Early Career Development Program ( ECDP ) might be just what you are looking for!

     

    Our program offers practical experience in archaeology, public history, archival research, and cultural resources management and planning. Ideal for students, recent graduates, and early-career professionals. You’ll have the opportunity to earn college credits (and money!), connect with mentors, and build a valuable professional network. You’ll learn about federal land management while gaining real-world experience to advance your career in cultural resources. Guided by experienced Resource Managers and Specialists, you’ll engaging hands-on environmental management projects, developing practical skills, and enhancing your professional growth.

     

    Paid, temporary positions are available with CSU CEMML at military installations across the United States and at CSUs main campus. These positions include internships, mentorships, and early career opportunities through CEMML’s ECDP . No military affiliation is required to apply.

    A Cultural Resources Technician (Seasonal Worker, Full-time, 40 hours/week) position is available with Colorado State University’s ( CSU ) Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands ( CEMML ). This entry-level position will support the Cultural Resources Management ( CRM ) Program at F.E. Warren Air Force Base ( AFB ), WY with a combination of fieldwork and office tasks. The technician will visit archaeological sites to gather data, conduct inventories and assessments, develop assessments, and perform site inspections or monitoring. Additional duties include developing Section 106 documentation and assisting the base with tribal meetings. Finally, the technician will work with the GIS department to develop strategies for making curation records more accessible. This position provides additional flexibility for the technician to explore additional areas of interest to build professional skillsets.

    Potential duties will include but are not limited to the tasks below:

    + Archaeological field-data collection, entry, and/or management

    + Archaeological inventory and/or assessment

    + Site inspections and/or monitoring

    + Help develop site protection plans

    + National Historic Preservation Act ( NHPA ) support including Section 106 compliance

    + Native American Graves and Protection Act ( NAGPRA ) support

    + State Historic Preservation Office ( SHPO ) correspondence and/or documentation

    + Update and/or maintain plan (Integrated Cultural Resource Management Plan)

    + Help write and edit technical reports

    + Historical and/or archival research

     

    The positions, duration, and the associated projects vary by location. Each position provides unique projects and tasks to help students and recent graduates understand the roles of environmental staff and methods they use to support their programs and environments. ECDP technicians will have the opportunity to expand their skills in various disciplines, including but not limited to:

     

    + Historical and archival research

    + National Historic Preservation Act ( NHPA ) compliance

    + Archaeological inventory and assessment

    + Historic property evaluation and monitoring

    + Cultural resource identification · GPS data collection and GIS mapping

    + Osteological identification and analysis

    + State Historic Preservation Office ( SHPO ) correspondence and documentation

    + Writing and editing technical reports

    Required Job Qualifications

    + Must have an interest in pursuing a career in federal lands management.

    + Must be physically capable of working independently in outdoor locations under varying weather conditions.

    + Pursuing a B.S. in archaeology-, history-, anthropology-, historic preservation-, or cultural resources-related field (at least a sophomore standing).

    + Experience using Microsoft Office Suite.

    + Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date for operating federal vehicles.

    + Must be able to pass a federal background investigation to obtain a Department of Defense Installation Access Pass.

    + Must have legal authorization to work in the U.S.; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

Currently enrolled or holder of a Graduate Degree in archaeology-, history-, anthropology-, historic preservation-, or cultural resources-related field.

    + Experience conducting research and compiling background information.

    + Experience inventorying and assessing cultural properties in accordance with Section 106 of the NHPA .

    + Experience photographing archaeological sites/properties or historic buildings and structures.

    + Experience using GPS equipment to collect field data.

    + Training and experience using GIS software.s
