    Job Location: Lawrence, KS * Summary:* * * The plant safety specialist works with the Plant Manager to provide environmental, health and safety support to production and office personnel. Helps maintain safety and health programs and objectives and coordinates safety training programs. Monitors safety and health regulations and provides technical support to plants to ensure compliance with federal and state safety and health regulations. * Main Responsibilities:* * * · Evaluate, implement, and maintain health, safety and environmental policies and procedures to protect employees and comply with company, state, federal and local regulations. · Plan, schedule, coordinate, and conduct safety orientation. · Identify, further develop and deliver training programs in a manner that raises employee’s awareness and enables employees and supervisors to work safely. · Maintain relevant EHS logs and documentation. · Develop and administer plant safety and environmental initiatives and lead continuous improvement efforts in those areas, utilizing effective communication skills (verbal and written). · Ensure daily, weekly, monthly and annual inspections and audits are completed as necessary to comply with local, state and federal regulations. · Enforce compliance of regulatory requirements (OSHA) including company EHS policies and procedures. · Manage and maintain the Safety Data Sheets (SDS), including evaluation of new raw materials for facility use considering safety and regulatory factors. · Conduct regular unannounced walk through of work areas and talk to the personnel to identify their concerns. Communicate safety and health issues to the workers in a manner to help them understand why they are important and addressing them is for their benefit. · Assist in emergency response and provide first aid guidance. · Manage facility workplace incident investigations to include responding to and reporting all incidents, incident investigations, determine root cause, establishing recurrence prevention plans, and follow through. Recognize and reward input from employees that improve safety and health in the workplace. * Minimum knowledge, skills, and abilities:* * * · Demonstrates broad knowledge of state and federal safety guidelines for the workplace. · Exhibits knowledge of appropriate emergency protocols. · Possesses knowledge of legal repercussions of workplace accidents. · Demonstrates familiarity with job site machinery and products. · Communicates clearly and effectively. · Pays close attention to detail. · Exhibits strong organizational skills. · Possesses solid problem-solving and analytical abilities. · Works well with a team. · Possesses strong writing skills. · Demonstrates ability to remain calm and cool-headed in the event of an emergency. · Excellent oral and written communication skills. · Proven ability to interact and communicate effectively at all levels within the organization. · Demonstrates a passion for safety and supports safe work practices. * Education and Experience Requirements:* * * · Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational/Industrial Safety, Safety Engineering, Human Factors or other EH&S related field preferred.  Equivalent related work experience that demonstrates professional EH&S skill set will be considered. · Ability to qualify and attain Associate Safety Professional (ASP) within 2 years through the Board of Certified Safety Professionals. · Preference for 3 to 5 years’ experience in a heavy manufacturing environment related to EHS program management.  · Preference for food, food-related or consumer package goods experience. · Extremely proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and related program software. · Ability to lift up to 45 pounds repetitively. · Ability to bend, twist, and stand on feet for long periods of time. · Exposed to food production environment and warehouse environment which may involve noise and fluctuating temperatures.
