    The Florida Youth Challenge Academy’s mission is to provide a highly disciplined and motivational environment, free from outside distractions, which fosters academics, leadership, development, personal growth, self-esteem, and physical fitness for qualifying high school dropouts. The Academy consists of an operational staff and cadre with in-depth military experience, certified instructors from the Clay County School District system, a registered nurse, counselors and recruitment and placement personnel.

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

    + New employees of the Department of Military Affairs will be required to pass a pre-employment drug screening.

    + New employees of the Department of Military Affairs are required to participate in a direct deposit/electronic transfer program.

    + The Department of Military Affairs is paid on a monthly basis.

    + This position is a Cooperative Agreement position.

    + As a CANDIDATE, you may be required to provide documentation (i.e., High School Diploma or Equivalency, College Transcripts, ETC.) to verify meeting these Minimum Qualifications.

    + Must be able to pass a Department of Juvenile Justice Background screening/test.

    + Must have and maintain a valid State of Florida Driver’s License.

    + Must possess or be able to obtain First Aid/CPR certification within six months of employment.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    + An Associate’s Degree in Nursing; AND

    + A Valid Practical Nursing License; AND

    + One (1) year of experience as a Licensed Practical Nurse; AND

    + A Valid Florida Driver’s License

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    + Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, manage, pick up from the pharmacy, and administer medications as prescribed by healthcare providers. Prepare medications for administration by Unlicensed Assistive Personnel when necessary. Serve as a resource person for technical knowledge related to the medical department and emergency needs at FLYCA.

    + Collect subjective and objective health data from clients and communicate information with the Registered Nurse and/or outside providers. Coordinate Telehealth appointments with parents for prescription refills, illness management, and transport cadets to outside appointments or emergency situations as needed.

    + Take vital signs as needed and document data in the client's health record. Obtain specimens for laboratory examination. Observe and monitor patients for changes in health status and report information to the Registered Nurse.

    + In the absence of a Registered Nurse, screen applicant files and records to determine if potential students are medically eligible and make recommendations to the Director.

    + In the absence of the Registered Nurse, the LPN on duty will be primary POC for medical emergencies and will determine if a cadet requires outside medical attention (calling EMS, transporting to urgent care and/or Emergency Room) and be primary medical POC for the shift supervisor on your shift.

    + Reinforce education provided by the Registered Nurse and/or medical provider. Reinforce education for FLYCA staff/students.

    + Be present for all events that fall on your shift (Family Day, Graduation, In processing, Home Pass). Assist licensed providers with conducting health examinations.

    + Maintain open communication with students, parents/guardians, medical personnel, providers, and Academy leadership.

    + May travel with operations staff for student pick-up to ensure accurate intake of medical information and medications upon intake to the Academy.

    + Participate in orientation and staff education for unlicensed assistive personnel.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

    + Knowledge of nursing principles, practices, and techniques.

    + Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology.

    + Knowledge of computer software and applications to include Microsoft Office Suite and internet.

    + Knowledge of instructional methods and curriculum development.

    + Ability to administer prescribed medications.

    + Ability to provide direct patient care and treatment.

    + Ability to work with patients having a variety of physical problems.

    + Ability to provide customer service and needs assessments.

    + Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.

    + Ability to communicate effectively.

    + Ability to develop and present training to staff and Cadets.

    + Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

    + Ability to perform physical activities to include use of arms, legs, hands, and feet. Lifting, bending, climbing, and handling equipment.
