    Assistant Principal Overview

     

    Barker Central School District is seeking a dynamic and unique Assistant Principal, who is student-centered and desires to be part of a collaborative team that continuously strives to improve the students' ability to learn, grow and develop.

    Qualifications:

    + At least three years experience in elementary and/or secondary education.

    + Valid teacher certification as a School Administrator or Supervisor, School District Administrator, School District Leader or equivalent.

    + Master's Degree with coursework in education administration, special education administration and/or curriculum-related subjects.

    + Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Education may find appropriate and acceptable.

     

    Supervisor: Building Principal and/or Coordinator of Curriculum and Professional Learning/AP

     

    Salary: $85,000 - $95,000 - Commensurate with experience

     

    Supervises: Assists the building principal overseeing all faculty and staff at the building level.

    Major Functions/Specific Responsibilities:

    + Assists in the evaluation, in concert with the building principal, of personnel serving in instruction and instructional support areas.

    + Assists in recruitment, selection, and recommendation for hiring of instructional and instructional support personnel.

    + Assists the building principal in all areas of managing the building including but not limited to: student discipline, planning and managing daily activities, budget development, conducting staff meetings, and providing expenditure control on established budget for all areas of the building.

    + Assists building principal in compiling, maintaining, and filing all reports, records, and other documents legally required or administratively useful.

    + Assists building principal in developing and maintaining complete and cumulative individual records of all children.

    + Assists in the preparation of attendance reports and similar data.

    + Assists the building principal in consulting with parents of students enrolled in any instructional program within the District.

    + Assumes responsibility for own professional growth and development; for keeping current with the literature, new research findings, and improved techniques; and for attending appropriate professional meetings and conventions.

    + Assists building principal and Coordinator of Curriculum and Professional Learning/AP in the development and coordination of the sections of the budget that pertain to instruction.

    + Keeps abreast of developments in all areas of instruction, and assists the Building Principal and Coordinator of Curriculum and Professional Learning/AP in providing leadership in determining their appropriateness for inclusion in the District educational program.

    + Assists the Building Principal and Coordinator of Curriculum and Professional Learning/AP in the improvement of individual staff competencies.

    + Assists the Building Principal and Coordinator of Curriculum and Professional Learning/AP with the implementation, review, and evaluation of District-wide testing programs, and for other evaluative measures used by the schools.

    + Studies federal legislation, projects, and programs for the possibilities and opportunities they offer for educational grants, entitlements, and allocations offered relevant to the needs of the District.

    + Assists the Building Principal and Coordinator of Curriculum and Professional Learning/AP with the professional staff in planning the wise utilization of funds available to the schools through various grant programs.

    + Assists the Building Principal and Coordinator of Curriculum and Professional Learning/AP with all requests from school personnel for projects and programs requiring grant moneys; establishes standard practices and procedures for receiving and processing such requests.

    + Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as may be assigned by the Superintendent, Building Principal and Coordinator of Curriculum and Professional Learning/AP.

    Additional responsibilities:

    Administration

     

    + Implements Board policies, applicable negotiated contracts, administrative rules and regulations.

    + Maintains and submits appropriate official records and reports to the Building Principal and/or Coordinator of Curriculum and Professional Learning/AP, the Board of Education and the State Education Department.

    + Reports directly to the Building Principal and/or Coordinator of Curriculum and Professional Learning/AP for the operation of the school program, conduct and care of the children, and all matters affecting the education program.

    + Assists Building Principal and/or Coordinator of Curriculum and Professional Learning/AP with plans, organizes and directs implementation of school activities.

    + Assists Building Principal and/or Coordinator of Curriculum and Professional Learning/AP with teacher duty schedules - bus, hall, detention and other extra-duty assignments such as study hall, dances, athletic events, etc.

    + May serve as interim/acting Building Principal in their absence.

    + Assists Building Principal and/or Coordinator of Curriculum and Professional Learning/AP with recommendations concerning the school's administration and program of instruction.

     

    Instruction

     

    + Reports to Building Principal and/or Coordinator of Curriculum and Professional Learning/AP with regard to appropriate building level office staff needs of the school with respect to personnel, equipment, supplies and curriculum.

    + Assists Building Principal and/or Coordinator of Curriculum and Professional Learning/AP with supervising the school's teaching/learning process, and assists coordinating the instructional program with administration at other levels of operation.

    + Assists Building Principal and/or Coordinator of Curriculum and Professional Learning/AP with the implementation of the District's plan to enhance individual student education and development.

    + Assists Building Principal and/or Coordinator of Curriculum and Professional Learning/AP with evaluations of the school's extracurricular program.

    + Assists Building Principal and/or Coordinator of Curriculum and Professional Learning/AP with reviews all curriculum guides and materials prepared by and to be distributed among the instructional staff prior to publication.

    + Assists Building Principal and/or Coordinator of Curriculum and Professional Learning/AP with group conferences to improve courses of study and teaching techniques in all curriculum areas.

    + Assists Building Principal and/or Coordinator of Curriculum and Professional Learning/AP with maintaining a clearing house of information on education, making such information available to all members of the staff on request.

    + Assists Building Principal and/or Coordinator of Curriculum and Professional Learning/AP with coordinating efforts for measuring the effectiveness of the instructional program.

    + Encourages experimental and innovative programs that will improve instruction.

    + Assists Building Principal with supervision and the development of the master schedule for grades PreK-12

    + Assists Building Principal and/or Coordinator of Curriculum and Professional Learning/AP with making recommendations for local curriculum and textbook adoptions to the Superintendent of Schools.

    + Assists Building Principal and/or Coordinator of Curriculum and Professional Learning/AP with the submission of new courses for approval to the Superintendent of Schools.

     

    Staff Personnel

     

    + Assists Building Principal and/or Coordinator of Curriculum and Professional Learning/AP with directions and monitoring the activities of the school's professional staff and classified staff in the performance of their duties and enforces district personnel policies as required.

    + Assists Building Principal and/or Coordinator of Curriculum and Professional Learning/AP with recruiting, screening, hiring and assigning of the school's non certificated staff with recommendations to the Superintendent of Schools.

    + Assists Building Principal and/or Coordinator of Curriculum and Professional Learning/AP with in recruiting, screening, hiring and assigning of the school's professional staff.

    + Assists Building Principal and/or Coordinator of Curriculum and Professional Learning/AP with the evaluation of staff members under his/her supervision regarding individual performance including all requirements under APPR.

    + Records and files conference notes, supervisory reports, and other pertinent data on teachers' performance as requested.

    + Assists Building Principal and/or Coordinator of Curriculum and Professional Learning/AP with orientation of newly assigned staff members and assists in their development as appropriate.

    + Assists Building Principal and/or Coordinator of Curriculum and Professional Learning/AP with discussions with new teachers concerning materials (and quantities) to be used, such as textbooks, dictionaries, supplementary materials, equipment and supplies.

    + Assists Building Principal with processing grievances that are appropriate to the administrative level.

    + Assists Building Principal with the preparation of the faculty handbook.

    + Assists Building Principal and/or Coordinator of Curriculum and Professional Learning/AP with advisement to central administration of all staffing needs.

    + Assists Building Principal and/or Coordinator of Curriculum and Professional Learning/AP with staff meetings and supervises other functions of staff and personnel.

    + Assists Building Principal and teachers in planning field trips, concerts, assembly programs and other activities.

    + Assists Building Principal and/or Coordinator of Curriculum and Professional Learning/AP with providing professional growth activities for administrative and teaching personnel assigned at building level.

    + Encourages attendance and participation in professional meetings.

     

    School Community Relations

     

    + Responsive to the community in the development of a general program of education approved by the Board of Education.

    + Assists in utilizing resources of the school system and the community in developing an effective educational program.

    + Collaborates with parent, faculty, and student groups for advancing educational programs.

    + Participates in a program of public relations in order to further the community's understanding and support of the educational program.

    + Receives and reviews complaints or problems concerning individual students and/or the operation of the school.

    + Makes arrangements for special conferences between parents and staff members.

    + Cooperates and coordinates matters dealing with out-of-school agencies such as welfare and child clinic centers.

     

    Student Relations

     

    + Promotes an effective learning climate in the school.

    + Promotes high standards of student conduct and enforces discipline as necessary, according due process to the rights of students.

    + Assumes responsibility for safety, conduct, and well-being of students while on school grounds or while under school supervision.

    + Attends special events held to recognize student achievement where appropriate.

    + Oversees and manages the development and enforcement of the student code of conduct.

    + Reports to the Building Principal and/or Coordinator of Curriculum and Professional Learning/AP on the progress and attendance of students.

     

    Professional Growth

     

    + Keeps abreast of trends, developments, and research as they pertain to education and school operation by attending professional meetings, reading professional journals and other publications, and discussing problems of mutual interest with others in the field.

    + Participates actively in the development of both building and district level management teams.
