    Responsibilities:

    GENERAL PURPOSE

    Responsible for attracting, encouraging and admitting of individuals to the University who meet the standards set by university policy. Assists in the recruiting, application and evaluation process. Develops the knowledge of the University and its range of available opportunities. Counsels / advises students, prospective students and families on matters of admissions. Advises prospective and continuing students on how to apply for admission. The Counselor is a member of the International Team and supports all aspects of team activities, including but not limited to international travel and recruitment; review of international applications; innovative implementation of technology to increase international student engagement; and training and management of student teams for student interviews.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    + General Counseling Duties on Campus

    + Prepare and deliver group information sessions for visiting families (daily in rotation) to contribute to their understanding of the University of Rochester’s culture and curriculum to help identify if their student is a possible fit for admission.

    + Support reception activities: for example, open houses - RR

    + (Research Rochester) and yield activities – Experience Days (2018 Experience, etc.) to both inform campus visitors and to answer questions about the Rochester application or financial aid process.

    + Plan and execute a virtual engagement strategy each year for international applicants who have reduced opportunities to meet University of Rochester representatives in person or on campus. Activities include promotion of our virtual resources (applicant interviews, tours, information sessions, and other events) to students and families; planning virtual events and identifying staff support across divisions of The College as needed; and managing a team of student employees to carry out virtual interviews.

    + Provide support for on campus counselor breakfasts, SSIC

    + (Secondary School Issues Conference), CORT (Colleges of

    + Rochester Tours), FLCT (Finger Lakes Counselor Tour), IB

    + (International Baccalaureate) Coordinators, CBO (Community Based

    + Organizations) Administrators, and other secondary school

    + Personnel, alumni, etc. by attending these events and interacting with Secondary School Counselors, CBO Administrators and other stakeholders as needed to help identify students for admission.

    Application Review

    + Reviews and evaluates undergraduate applications from assigned geographic regions / schools (domestic, and international) as a first reader for Arts, Sciences and Engineering to determine admissibility based on various secondary / post-secondary school curricula and credit review, non-academic / extra-curricular engagement, written communication samples and non-cognitive and values-based characteristics, and behavioral demonstration. Application review may include first-year, transfer and / or international applications.

    + Serves as a key member of an admissions committee member for an assigned geographic territory to make final admissions decision recommendations where there is a disagreement on the admission decision between first and second reader.

    + Conduct admission interviews and complete interview forms in Admissions Online System (AOS) on prospective students to determine applicant interest and to begin to inform the possibility of their admission.

    + Answer telephone, email inquiries, and participate in College Week Live to establish relationships with students, their families, and other external constituents in order to recruit students to the University.

    Recruitment Travel

    + Conduct market/territory research to identify prospective undergraduate students and plan travel accordingly.

    + Plan and execute high school visits, off-campus admissions interviews, college fairs, and alumni admission events in assigned region during fall, spring, and summer semesters that include 6+ weeks of off campus travel.

    + Build and sustain relationships through off-campus meetings with secondary school counselors, CBO contacts, and alumni admission volunteers as a part of territory management to contribute to the university enrollment goals of recruiting and enrolling undergraduates.

    + Plan, coordinate, and execute with the guidance of the Associate Director of Alumni Programs and the Project Manager, Planning & Events, alumni programs (yield receptions, summer send-offs, alumni training events, interview programs, etc.) in assigned territories.

    + Prepare reports, debriefs, and budgets related to regional recruitment team travel plans to ensure that territory programs remain aligned with and directly contribute to enrollment goals.

    General Admissions Responsibilities

    + Conducts admissions interviews and completes formal interview write up, which is included in the student’s record and potential application for admissions.

    + Answers telephone and email inquiries from a variety of constituents across all phases of the admission cycle.

    + Provides timely, accurate and supportive information to help prospective students, families, school-based, independent and community-based organization counselors.

    + Engages in a variety of activities across larger admissions teams

    + (Programming & Events, International Initiatives, Recruitment & Outreach Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, and Marketing & Communications) to provide enhanced constituent admissions / recruitment experiences designed to meet Office of Admissions recruitment goals.

    International Enrollment Advising

    + Maintain and improve the process for international enrolling undergraduates to obtain immigration approval to come to the University by using expertise in Slate (our customer relationship management platform) process building, architecture, and reporting. Continue to automate processes whenever possible through continued learning of Slate process building.

    + Advise 450+ enrolling undergraduate international students on the application process for I-20 forms or other documentation needed to obtain immigration approval.

    + Create communications to students and provides accurate information on the I-20 process. Ensure consistent communications to facilitate accurate and timely submission of supporting immigration documentation from students.

    + Verify documentation and New Student Request Forms for each student’s I-20 application to initiate processing of I-20 forms by the International Services Office.

    Other Duties as Assigned

    + Continues growth and development in the admissions domain through attendance at conferences, workshops (etc.) as a participant, panelist, presenter, and or moderator; remains current in the field, implements best practices, and incorporates knowledge into practice.

    + Other duties as assigned by supervisor or other leaders.

    + Supervise the shipment of completed I-20 forms to students. Manage relationship with outside shipping vendor to provide students with streamlined shipping requests and payment platforms for I-20 forms.

    + Utilize PowerFAIDS financial aid software to review student aid packages required to update I-20 request paperwork.

    + Collaborate with the International Services Office, the Financial Aid Office, and other stakeholders on campus, to keep application processing simplified and updated per their requirements necessary to verify financial support for program enrollment in special cases.

    General Responsibilities

    MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

    + Bachelor’s degree required

    + One year of experience in related field such as higher education, college admissions, school counseling, or equivalent combination of education and experience required.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

    + Microsoft Suite of Products or the equivalent and data analysis.Evening and weekend assignments are frequent required.

    LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

    + Valid driver’s license recognized by the State of New York and the ability to travel by air, rail, and water required.
