    Position Overview:

    The Assistant Athletic Trainer (Lead Football AT) is responsible for supporting the comprehensive Sports Medicine program at Hartwick College under the direction of the Head Athletic Trainer, in collaboration with athletic training staff and the occupational therapist. This is a full-time, annually renewable position with the potential for long-term employment. We are seeking an individual who will take primary responsibility for the football program, including daily treatments, rehabilitation, and full coverage of all practices, home, and away competitions. This position will also serve as the designated First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor, certified through the American Red Cross, leading training for athletics staff and student workers. The ideal candidate will bring strong clinical skills, a proactive approach to emergency care, and a passion for working in a collaborative collegiate environment.

    Responsibilities:

    + Provide daily injury prevention, on-site evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of student-athletes, with a primary focus on the football program

    + Serve as the lead athletic trainer for football, managing all aspects of sports medicine coverage during home and away games, practices, and off-season activities

    + Provide emergency medical evaluation, injury triage, and acute care services in practice and competition settings

    + Serve as the American Red Cross certified First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor, overseeing certification and recertification for coaching staff, athletics personnel, and student employees

    + Collaborate with the team physician(s), Director of College Health Services, and football coaching staff to ensure a comprehensive and coordinated approach to student-athlete health

    + Maintain accurate and confidential clinical documentation, including documentation of injury reports and rehabilitation logs in the EMR system.

    + Coordinate pre-season physicals and baseline testing, ensuring student-athletes are cleared for participation

    + Communicate effectively with coaches, administrators, and healthcare providers regarding injury status, treatment plans, and return-to-play progression

    + Mentor and supervise student athletic training assistants and interns

    + Assist with inventory management, supply ordering, and budget tracking, especially for football-related needs

    + Ensure department compliance with NCAA, Empire 8, and institutional medical policies and procedures

    + Support the implementation of concussion protocols, mental health referral processes, and sports medicine education initiatives

    + Advocate for the well-being of all student-athletes, ensuring access to comprehensive physical and mental healthcare resources

    + Demonstrate professionalism and leadership as a role model within the athletics department

    + Perform additional duties as assigned by the Head Athletic Trainer and/or Director of Athletics

    Requirements

    Minimum Qualifications:

    + Bachelor's degree in athletic training or bachelor's degree with an entry-level master's in athletic training

    + National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification (NATABOC)

    + NYS Athletic Trainer Licensure or Eligible to be Licensed

    + First-Aid and Professional Rescuer CPR/AED Instructor certification

    + First-Aid and Professional Rescuer CPR/AED certification

    + Effective written and verbal communication, computer, and web-related skills

    + Available weekday late afternoons, evenings, and weekends. Travel as needed.

    + Must have a valid, unrestricted driver’s license and be insurable through the college

     

    Candidates who have recently obtained NATABOC certification are encouraged to apply!

    Preferred Qualifications:

    + 2-3 years NCAA Division III Collegiate Athletic Training Experience

    + First-Aid/CPR instructor certification preferred (American Red Cross preferred)

     

    Salary: $52,000-55,000 - commensurate with experience. 10-month position

     

    Candidates should demonstrate strong organizational, interpersonal, and time management skills, along with excellent written and verbal communication abilities. They must serve as role models and leaders within the athletic training environment. The ability to multitask, adapt to daily operational changes, and perform basic supervisory duties is highly desirable. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Drive) is required. A thorough understanding of NCAA regulations related to sports medicine is essential.
