    Summary:

    In collaboration with the oncology genetics program manager, the oncology genetic counselor provides all aspects of cancer genetic counseling to patients and families referred for such services.

     

    While this is a work-from-home position, the candidate will need to be within driving distance to UNC Rex to attend meetings and other onsite activities.

    Responsibilities:

    • Provide genetic counseling to individuals at risk of hereditary cancer syndromes in accordance with NSCG/ACMG best practice and NCCN guidelines.

    •Collect and interpret personal and family medical histories to assess cancer risk.

    •Educate patients about the implications of genetic testing, including benefits, limitations, and potential outcomes.

    •Coordinate appropriate genetic tests; interpret and communicate results to patients and healthcare teams.

    •Develop personalized risk management plans, including cancer screening and prevention strategies based on genetic test results.

    •Document findings in the electronic medical record in compliance with standard-of-care practices.

    •Stay current with developments in genetics and oncology to ensure accurate and evidence-based counseling.

    •Provide periodic lectures to clinical staff and other medical professionals regarding current trends in genetics and genetic testing.

    •Participate in department and service line meetings as appropriate.

    •As requested, participate in tumor boards to identify patients at risk for hereditary cancer predisposition syndromes and provide expertise regarding genetic testing.

    •Able to participate in research activities related to oncology genetics, as they arise.

    Education Requirements:

    • Master’s degree genetics or genetic counseling.

    Licensure/Certification Requirements:

    • American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) or American board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG) certification.

    Professional Experience Requirements:

    • A minimum of 3 years of cancer genetic counseling experience required.

    Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:

    • Excellent communication skills

    • Ability to work autonomously and utilize organizational skills

    • Ability to provide sensitive and accurate genetic counseling services to patients and families

    • Ability to collaborate and coordinate patient care with other disciplines, including medical oncology, surgery, gi and others

    • Ability to prepare and present educational activities to patients, families, trainees, multidisciplinary groups with unc health, etc.
