Pharmacy Technician

Summary The employee will assist the pharmacist in providing optimal care and timely service in accordance with the mission, vision, and goals of the Bay Pines VA Healthcare System and Pharmacy. Pharmacy technicians at this level function in various areas of the pharmacy, e.g., inpatient pharmacy, outpatient pharmacy and other patient care areas. Pharmacy technicians provide various technical support services within the pharmacy department. Responsibilities The duties of the Pharmacy Technician include, but are not limited to the following: Outpatient Pharmacy Prescription Assembly Assembles prescriptions properly with the correct drug, strength, quantity, auxiliary labels, and prescription labels. for window dispensing and mail delivery Assures that the correct medication is filled by using bar code scanning on stock bottles. Supports automation by manually completing prescriptions not processed through the automation dispensing machine. Assures the timely completion of all prescriptions. Window Pick-Up Verifies the patient's identification following the Medical Center's policies (i.e., double patient identifiers) Verifies that the patient receives the correct prescriptions by using VA software (i.e., VISTA and barcode scanning) Verifies that the patient has received all prescriptions (i.e., refrigerated, controlled substances, bulk medications, etc.) Mail/Cold Pack Packaging Utilizes and comprehends the mail shipping programs used by the facility (i.e., USPS, FedEx, UPS, etc.) for overnight delivery of non-controlled and controlled prescriptions. Performs searches, updates patient information, and generates shipping reports as requested by the supervisor. Calls patients to arrange delivery of refrigerated prescriptions and verifies patients address. Packages prescriptions appropriately, as to assure that packages are not damaged within transit (i.e., bubble wrap, ice blocks, insulated containers, etc.) Utilizes VA software programs to check narratives and problem solve deliveries for patients with no physical address. Hometown/VACC Assists the Hometown Pharmacist with the CMOP reject reports. Contacts veteran to update address for those with a bad address indicator. Reprints or re-submits labels to CMOP once stock availability has been confirmed. Coordinates shipments of REMS medications. Monitors the CCC TEAMS Channel and answers questions or notify the appropriate person to help resolves issues. Monitors MEDS ON ADMISSION and DISCHARGE MEDICATIONS. If the patient is still in the hospital or released, incumbent will arrange for medications to be mailed or destroyed based on CPRS notes and guidance from a pharmacist. Inpatient Pharmacy Sterile Product Compounding. These functions will be supported assisting in or the absence of the sterile compounding technician (i.e., after hours, weekends, and leave). Follow USP 797/800 Guidelines for the compounding of all sterile preparations, including ophthalmic, cardioplegic, TPN, hazardous, large & small volume IV solutions, PCAs, etc. Manufactures uncomplicated and/or complicated parenteral admixtures to be delivered in the form of large volume, small volume, infusion syringe or other as required. Correctly interprets physician orders, selects, and measures appropriate ingredients, mixes ingredients in a safe and effective manner, inspects the final product for accuracy, suitability, and elegance, labels the product, maintains records of the manufacturing process, and supplies the product for pharmacist verification and delivery. Uses standard protocols to determine an accurate expiration date for each batch prepared. Consistently displays competence with good manufacturing practices and sterile technique through demonstration and/or actual work performance. Follows proper aseptic preparation techniques when compounding sterile products. Appropriately maintains all quality assurance records in accordance with regulatory requirements. Unit Dose Medication Management Performs review of medications prepared by another pharmacy employee to be dispensed to hospital areas. Inventories and replenishes emergency trays. Operates and maintains automated dispensing unit dose systems. Inspects packaged items for accuracy and suitability before submitting for final check, prior to distribution to hospital areas. Assures repackaged dosage forms are labeled according to USP and VA standards and attains a final review by a pharmacist. Maintains repackaging records that assures all regulatory and review standards are met. Trouble-shoots minor mechanical problems of all automated systems as they occur and coordinates resolution of more involved mechanical or software problems with Supervisor, vendor help desk, ADPAC, etc. as appropriate. Work Schedule: Variable - Will be required to work variable tours of duty including evenings, weekends and holidays based on the needs of the Service. Compressed: Anticipated schedule is to work an overnight tour of Duty, 7 Days On and 7 Days Off in the inpatient pharmacy setting. Telework: Not Available Virtual: This is not a virtual position. Qualifications BASIC REQUIREMENTS Citizenship. Be a citizen of the United States. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens. English Language Proficiency. Pharmacy Technician candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed. GRADE DETERMINATIONS Pharmacy Technician, GS-07 Experience. One year of experience equivalent to the next lower (GS-6) level. Certification-Documentation Supplied. For positions above the full performance level, the employee must pass a national certification exam and hold an active national certification through either: PTCB as a CPhT. OR NHA as a ExCPT. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs). In addition to the education or experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: Knowledge of pharmacy technician principles, practices, concepts and theories providing for sound independent work. Knowledge of the computerized prescription process and input of prescriptions and medication orders or electronic equivalent. Ability to resolve pharmacy/medication issues with other members of the healthcare team, Veterans and external customers. Ability to train developmental pharmacy technicians and students. Ability to dispense medication or sterile products following all regulations, policies and procedures to ensure safe medication distribution. Ability to troubleshoot automated dispensing equipment (ADE) or technology platforms/databases. Preferred Experience: One year of experience compounding sterile products using aseptic technique. Demonstrated competency in preparing sterile medications accurately and safely, following stringent aseptic guidelines. One year of experience filling and troubleshooting Pyxis. Proficiency with Pyxis automated dispensing systems, including the ability to effectively fill, pend, load, manage inventories, utilize reports, and troubleshoot any operational issues. One year of hospital experience. Experience working in a large, complex VA medical center as a pharmacy technician. Experience preparing and dispensing medications. Competence in preparing and dispensing unit dose medications accurately and efficiently. This includes ensuring proper labeling, prepackaging, and adherence to protocols and regulations.
