Job Description
The Student Intern supports wildfire information and public education efforts across Texas. The intern will assist the Wildfire Information & Education Program within the Mitigation & Prevention Department in developing and sharing clear, engaging an informative content about wildfire risk, preparedness and prevention. Working under supervision, the intern will gain hands-on experience in public information strategies, media outreach and community engagement related to fire management. This role offers an opportunity to contribute to meaningful wildfire communication initiatives while learning from experienced professionals in a dynamic, mission-driven environment.
Responsibilities:
-Assist in creating educational and outreach materials on wildfire prevention, safety and response.
-Help draft social media posts, website content and news releases tailored to public and stakeholder audiences.
-Support communication efforts during wildfire incidents, including gathering and organizing information.
-Participate in planning and implementing fire prevention messaging campaigns.
-Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to promote public awareness of wildfire issues.
-Other duties as assigned.
Working Environment: Mixed office-type environment with field work and occasional travel. May require exposure to weather, operating and lifting equipment during field work, walking, standing, twisting and bending for extended periods of time as well as lifting heavy objects.
Education and Experience: Required Education : At the time of the application, must be enrolled at an accredited college/university with at least 30 hours toward a Bachelor's degree in Agricultural Communications, Agricultural Leadership, Forestry, Natural Resource Management or closely related field. Preference will be given to candidates with a GPA over 3.0.
Preferred Education : At the time of the application, must be enrolled at an accredited college/university with at least 80 hours toward a Bachelor's degree in Agricultural Communications, Agricultural Leadership, Forestry, Natural Resource Management or closely related field. Preference will be given to candidates with a GPA over 3.0 and those who have taken coursework in communications and natural resource management. Required Experience : Three (3) months working experience in any field.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Required Knowledge : Working knowledge of word processing presentation an various communication software.
Required Skills: Strong interpersonal skills, including working with a variety of people. Must have excellent oral and written communication skills. Required Ability : Work independently and be self-directed. Ability to develop and maintain relationships with various cooperators, stakeholders, media partners and the public. Multi-task and work cooperatively with others.
Registrations, Certifications, and Licenses: Required : Valid Texas Driver's license
Preferred : NWCG firefighter and prevention training or equivalent. FFT-1 under NWCG, TPL-1, or Dozer Operator, TCFP or SFFMA Basic Firefighter or higher certification.
