Description:
HVAC Controls Technician troubleshoots, calibrates, repairs, maintains and operates the DDC BAS (Direct Digital Control Building Automation System), pneumatic and electro-pneumatic systems, central HVAC equipment including pumps, chillers, condensers, air handling units and miscellaneous control elements.
Additionally, the Lead Technician will distribute and supervise the work of 2-3 fellow Technicians in their group. Under the direction of the HVAC Supervisor, the Lead will facilitate the daily taskload for their team, assign work orders, review and sign off on purchase orders, etc.
Systems supported include DX units, environmental chambers, walk-in coolers and freezers, air dryers, ice machines, packaged units, CRAC units, dehumidification systems, refrigerated scientific equipment, ultra-low and cryogenic equipment, small chillers, and hot water and steam boiler systems.
Tasks include:
+ Troubleshooting complex control circuits, replacing compressors, repairing refrigerant leaks, replacing fan/blower motors, changing out various refrigeration mechanical and electrical controls, and maintaining EPA refrigerant management logs.
+ Additional work includes maintaining and repairing complex boiler systems, calibrating boilers to run efficiently, and preparing boilers for state inspections.
+ Performs some equipment replacements and installations, and may work on construction or renovation projects, providing written comments that may not meet plans, specifications, codes, or guidelines.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit:
The Office of Facilities is responsible for providing services relative to building and grounds maintenance, utilities, transportation, trash removal, central receiving, recycling, disposition of surplus property and moving and hauling. In addition, Facilities has expanding responsibilities that includes providing support services for the instruction and research programs to achieve the University’s mission, goals and objectives. Maintains and improves and expands all campus buildings, campus image and education opportunities for all people. More specifically, the functions involve energy conservation, building renovation/repair, occupational safety and health, landscape design, event planning, vehicle and equipment maintenance/repair, motor pool and housekeeping services to 40 academic buildings, 14 residence halls and 19 farm buildings (15 research and 21 support facilities). Moreover, the Skilled Trades Department is responsible for operation, repair, maintenance and preventive maintenance of campus facilities. The HVAC Shop troubleshoots, calibrates, repairs, maintains and operates the DDC BAS (Building Automation Systems), pneumatic and electro-pneumatic systems, central HVAC equipment including pumps, chillers, condensers, AHU’s and miscellaneous control elements.

Requirements:
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification(s). Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Preferred:
+ Associate’s Degree in Air Conditioning, Heating and Cooling or completion of trade school course of study in industrial/commercial HVAC equipment, controls and operations.
+ Proficient in PC operations, air compressors, steam/hot water central valves and pneumatic controls and control systems or six (6) years of progressive experience in industrial/commercial HVAC activities.
+ Experience in Computerized Maintenance Management System ( CMMS ), and ability to understand information conveyed from technicians, staff, or anything displayed on a computer screen through CMMS .
+ Experience in a campus based environment or industrial setting preferred
+ Knowledge of building automation system software supporting HVAC , steam, and power distribution •Trades experience of all types within the maintenance industry
