    Duties Description Under the supervision of the Historic Site Manager and the Interpretive Programs Assistant, the Lead Interpreter will perform a range of administrative and historical interpretive duties at Johnson Hall State Historic Site. Duties include but are not limited to: • Conducting tours of the historic house and associated property for the general public, school classes, tourists, and community groups.• Assisting in delivering outreach programs to schools and other community organizations, special events, and programming at the historic site.• Assisting with the supervision of historic housekeeping, collections care, and monitoring and maintaining climate controls.• Assisting the IPA in developing and reviewing interpretive content to be shared through agency publications and on the site’s social media.• Assisting with visitor services, answering phones, responding to public inquiries, and communicating effectively with staff and site visitors.• Assisting with visitor services, admissions, and revenue handling.• Conducting research on the history of the site and its residents. • Maintaining and promoting a safe working environment by applying appropriate safety practices.• Performing other related duties as assigned.

     

    Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: No minimum qualification per Civil Service. Preferred Qualifications: • BA in studies focused on Dutch History, Colonial and/or early American History, Native American or African American studies. • Experience conducting historical research and delivering interpretation to diverse audiences.• Experience or willingness to deliver living history interpretation preferred• Experience working or volunteering in a museum or other cultural institution.

     

    Additional Comments OPERATIONAL NEEDS:• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment. • Must possess strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently as well as with others. • Must be able to communicate effectively with other staff and park patrons in a responsible and courteous manner.• Must possess proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint. • Ability to perform medium to heavy physical labor, including medium-heavy lifting and using step ladders.BENEFITS:This position has the option to join the NYS Employees’ Retirement System and may be eligible for health insurance, dental and vision coverage as well as the opportunity for paid time off in the form of vacation, sick, personal and holiday leave after time and service requirements have been met.To learn more about our benefits, visit: https://parks.ny.gov/employment/benefits.aspx
