    Job Title: Histology TechnicianJob Description

     

    Under direct supervision, the histology technician is responsible for preparing and processing tissue specimens for microscopic examination by a Pathologist. This includes embedding, cutting, and staining a wide variety of tissue specimens.

    Responsibilities

    + Mix ingredients and perform quality assurance procedures in the laboratory.

    + Prepare solutions, diagnostic test reagents, surgical tissue specimens, and tissue and bone sections.

    + Sort and chill tissue blocks, and sort, number, and label specimens in specified sequence.

    + Embed tissue and examine media for physical defects.

    + Examine reagents for contamination, impurities, or instability.

    + Maintain microtome blades and prepare frozen section slides and control slides.

    + Stain microscopic slides and store specimens in freezer.

    + Set up specimen tests and controls for interpretation.

    + Clean work area and dispose properly of laboratory specimens and waste material.

    + Wash laboratory glassware and instruments.

    + Perform special histochemical techniques and plastic techniques.

    + Read and assess control slides and consult with pathologist concerning lab techniques.

    + Look up and report test results as requested.

    + Prepare lab worksheets, file slides, and tissue cards.

    + Maintain current records of all testing and daily logs of complete studies.

    + Record and maintain records of equipment usage, Quality Control Record sheets, and previous maintenance sheets.

    + Calibrate and adjust equipment in preparation for and during procedures.

    + Clean, lubricate, and perform routine preventive maintenance on equipment.

    + Maintain equipment in good working order.

    + Maintain and order supplies, and properly dispose of waste materials.

    + Properly dispose of contaminated or biohazardous materials.

    + Maintain solutions, chemicals, and automatic equipment.

    + Replenish supplies and equipment.

    + Serve as a resource person to co-workers by answering procedural questions and assisting in problem solving.

    + Answer telephones and take messages.

    + Assume other activities and responsibilities from time to time as deemed necessary.

    Essential Skills

    + Minimum of 6 months to 1 year of experience as a Certified Histology Technician in a high-volume laboratory.

    + Recent experience with routine and special histopathological techniques.

    + Ability to consistently demonstrate knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviors necessary for superior and culturally sensitive service.

    Additional Skills & Qualifications

    + Bachelor's Degree in a science-related field is preferred.

    + ASCP certificate or exam eligibility.

    + Histologic Technician Certificate from American Society for Clinical Pathologists.

    Work Environment

    The work environment is a fast-paced histology/pathology lab with like-minded individuals. The position requires working the PM shift.

    Pay and Benefits

    The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $55.00/hr.
