PerkSpot is searching for a Principal Engineer to join our Engineering team! The Principal Engineer is a key technical leader within the software engineering team. This role focuses on driving technical strategy, leading complex architectural initiatives, and delivering high-impact solutions across multiple projects. As an individual contributor, the Principal Engineer collaborates closely with cross-functional teams to ensure scalable, maintainable, and high-performance systems, while mentoring engineers and fostering a culture of technical excellence.
This position is required to be in the office 3 days a week Tuesday, Wednesday, & Thursday. Our offices are located in River North just north of downtown Chicago, IL.
What you’ll accomplish:
+ Define and evolve the architecture and design of complex systems and platforms.
+ Provide technical leadership across engineering teams on design patterns, best practices, and coding standards.
+ Proactively identify & recommend to leadership strategic technical initiatives, including system modernization, SDLC, unsupported tools, areas of risk and performance optimizations.
+ Collaborate with product managers and stakeholders to align technical solutions with business goals.
+ Lead technical reviews, provide design feedback, and set standards for code quality and testing.
+ Identify areas for improvement and lead efforts to reduce technical debt.
+ Recommend system and data changes to improve user experience and prepare for next-level generation of the software.
+ Author and manage development standards & policies.
+ Serve as a mentor, technical coach and role model to engineers.
+ Supervise implementation of new software features and provides training to the engineering team.
+ Perform Senior code review approvals.
+ Ensure optimal up-time and performance by collaborating with DevOps Engineers.
+ Participates in Architecture Board.
+ Stay informed of emerging trends in software development and evaluate new technologies.
What we’re looking for:
+ 10+ years of software engineering experience with a strong background in system architecture and software design.
+ Expertise in one or more programming languages (e.g., Java, Python, C#, Go, etc.).
+ Deep experience with distributed systems, cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP), and CI/CD pipelines.
+ Strong understanding of data structures, algorithms, and software engineering principles.
+ Is certified in mission-critical areas such as Privacy Protection, Payment Compliance, Taxation and other State/ Federal laws, etc.
+ Proven experience in leading cross-team technical initiatives.
+ Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
Preferred Skills & Qualifications:
+ Experience in mentoring and developing engineering talent.
+ Background in DevOps, SRE, or infrastructure as code is a plus.
+ Open-source contributions or technical publications.
+ Experience in a regulated or high-availability environment (e.g., fintech, healthcare).

The pay:
PerkSpot offers competitive industry rate salaries with the goal of retaining and growing talented individuals. We regularly review and adjust our compensation structure as needed to ensure equity and across teams and levels. The salary range for this position is $180,000 - $190,000 plus $8,000 annual bonus.

+ To help you get a jump start on company holidays, we close at 1 pm the day prior to each company holiday as “holiday eve.”
