    Job Summary

    The D. Dan and Betty Kahn Health Care Pavilion is a 12-story hospital that will house 264 private rooms capable of converting to intensive care; a state-of-the-art neurosciences center; and high-level, specialty care services for cardiovascular and thoracic patients, along with advanced imaging. The 690,000-square-foot hospital which also features20 surgical and three interventional radiology suites is being constructed adjacent to the Frankel Cardiovascular Center, with plans for bridge and tunnel connections to existing inpatient care facilities. The anticipated opening of the new D. Dan and Betty Kahn Health Care Pavilion is fall 2025.

    Responsibilities*

    Job Summary

    The Department of Otolaryngology is seeking a qualified Advanced Practice Provider (APP) to join the inpatient service. The APP will manage complex care for adult patients on the Maize and Neuro-otology service and will evaluate, manage, and implement treatment plans for inpatient consults and follow-ups, including patients with tracheostomies.

    Responsibilities:

    + Manage complex care for adult Otolaryngology inpatients, including those with skull base conditions, airway stenosis, sleep disorders, and post-head and neck surgery.

    + Evaluate and implement treatment plans for adult Otolaryngology consults and follow-ups, in collaboration with residents and attending physicians. Common cases include epistaxis, head and neck infections, upper airway and laryngeal evaluations (e.g., for hoarseness or dysphagia), and ear assessments for hearing loss or otalgia.

    + Serve as back-up provider for the Adult Tracheostomy Service, managing and implementing orders for adult inpatients with tracheostomies.

    + Facilitate decannulation pathways and assist primary teams with longitudinal tracheostomy management.

    + Order, interpret, and manage appropriate imaging and laboratory studies.

    + Identify, prescribe, and monitor appropriate pharmacologic therapies.

    + Document care in accordance with institutional standards, including progress notes, consults, discharge summaries, and associated billing codes.

    + Coordinate timely discharges through patient and family education, problem-solving for discharge barriers, and communication with the chief resident and supervising physician.

    + Evaluate acute post-operative Otolaryngology patients.

    + Assist with minor procedures as directed by attending physicians.

    + Coordinate and discuss patient care with consulting services.

    + Coordination and discussion of patient care with consulting services.

    Required Qualifications*

    NP:

    ? Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse and specialty certification as a NP in the State of Michigan

    ? Current specialty certification to practice as an Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Adult Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner.

    ? Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.

    ? Certification as a Nurse Practitioner recognized by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN).

    ? Current DEA registration required

    ? ACLS required (separate AHA approved BLS also required unless ACLS was completed through the UMHS Simulation Center).

    ? One (1) year of experience as a PA/NP

    PA:

    ? Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan.

    ? Satisfactory completion of a Physician Assistant program accredited by Accreditation Review Commission Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor agencies, CAHEA or CAAHEP.

    ? Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA).

    ? State of Michigan Controlled Substance License Required

    ? Current DEA registration required

    ? ACLS required (separate AHA approved BLS also required unless ACLS was completed through the UMHS Simulation Center).

    ? One (1) year of experience as a PA/NP

    Desired Qualifications*

    ? One (1) year of experience as a PA/NP providing surgical patient care.

    ? At least one (1) year of Otolaryngology experience as a PA/NP; inpatient experience preferred.

    ? Demonstrated experience managing adult tracheostomy patients.

    ? Proficiency in conducting history and physical exams, writing patient orders and progress notes, performing rounds and consultations, and ordering/interpreting diagnostic studies.

    ? Experience performing independent minor procedures and/or assisting in the OR.

    ? Strong verbal and written communication skills.

    ? Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.

     

    Work Schedule

     

    Hours/week: 40 hours/week, including weekdays and alternating weekends.
