Description
The Instructor trains in Medical and Public Health Microbiology in all areas of the clinical microbiology laboratory, including Bacteriology, Mycobacteriology, Mycology, Virology, Parasitology, and Serology/Immunology. The two (2) years Medical and Public Health Microbiology program at the University of Rochester is intended to comprehensively train for leadership positions in clinical or public health laboratories, in industry, or in government. Experience is gained through laboratory bench training and experience, clinical conferences, observation of Infectious Disease clinical consultations, research seminars, training workshops, mandatory and optional courses, self-instructional materials, contemporary and historical reference materials, and involvement in laboratory management.
Supervision and Direction Received
• Under the supervision of Clinical Microbiology laboratory directors, the Instructor will be directed towards fulfillment of all Training Objectives required to fulfill the “Essentials and Guidelines” of an Accredited Postdoctoral Program in Medical and Public Health Microbiology as described by the Committee on Postdoctoral Educational Programs (CPEP, American Society for Microbiology).
Typical Responsibilities
• Develop expertise in the selection of appropriate laboratory tests and effectively interpret and communicate results.
• Learn methods available for the laboratory diagnosis of infectious diseases and the major clinical features of these diseases.
• Understand the principles and practice of infection control and public health microbiology.
• Teaching (formal didactic lectures, clinical case presentations, techniques).
• Gain experience in the administration of a clinical laboratory.
General Requirements
• Adhere to the Operational Guidelines of an Accredited Postdoctoral Program in Medical and Public Health Microbiology as described by the Committee on Postdoctoral Educational Programs (CPEP, American Society for Microbiology)

Qualifications
CPEP programs are open to postdoctoral-level candidates (e.g., Ph.D., M.D., Sc.D., D.O., and Dr. P.H.); however, Doctorates of Clinical Laboratory Sciences (DCLS), Pharmacy (PharmD), or Health Sciences are not acceptable for admission to a CPEP-accredited program.

The referenced pay range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the base range of compensation for this faculty position. Individual salaries will be determined within the job’s salary range and established based on (but not limited to) market data, experience and expertise of the individual, and with consideration to related position salaries. Alignment of clinical incentive-based compensation may also be applicable and will be discussed during the hiring process
