Job Description

The Department of Department of Mechanical Engineering has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist/Engineer 4 to join Dr. Igor Novosselov's research group.

This position will conduct research to support the Novosselov Research Group which conducts a range of basic and applied research in the areas of fluids dynamics and energy. The multidisciplinary research at the NRG laboratory spans several areas, namely: sampling and analysis of particulate matter, particle surface interaction in the boundary layer, ionized flow near surfaces, combustion aerosol synthesis and deposition, modeled based combustion control, and chemical kinetics in supercritical water reactor.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

+ Development and testing methods related to water remediation technologies, such hydrothermal alkaline treatment and supercritical water oxidation, including development the kinetic rate and pathways for recalcitrant compounds such as neat PFAS and PFAS-containing matrices.

+ Develop and test methods for removal of recalcitrant organics using granular activated carbon and other sorbents, including sorbent regeneration and recalcitrant organics recovery by thermochemical methods.

+ Develop analytical methods for analysis of recalcitrant organics and the intermediate compounds produced during the hydrothermal degradation and sorbent regeneration.

+ Assist in preparation of scientific papers and reports to the sponsors (DoD, EPA).

+ Assist in preparation of grant proposals (DoD, EPA).

+ Maintain the chemical inventory and equipment related to the Water remediation projects. **MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS**

+ Master’s Degree in Engineering, Chemistry or related field

+ Four years of relevant experience in sorbents, fluorocarbons, and ion exchange resin OR equivalent combination of education/experience. **Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.** **ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS**

+ Environmental engineering and water quality research.

+ Knowledge of instrumentation, protocols and methods related to in analytical chemistry.

+ Good technical writing skill to assist with the monthly preparation of deliverables, reports, publications, and presentations.

+ Strong communication skills with professors, engineers, subject matter experts, medical professionals, graduate students, and other team members to write, edit, format, and produce accurate and meaningful technical documentation. **DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS**

+ Experience in mass spectrometry, LC-MS, GS-MS.

+ Experience in the areas of PFAS analysis.

+ Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, especially with medical, engineering, and other professional communities.
