    Summary

    The State Veterinarian is responsible for representing the agency in national and international animal health cooperative programs and planning programs to prevent, control, and eradicate diseases affecting domestic animals and poultry. This position is governed by United States Department of Agriculture regulations, state laws, and agency policy.

     

    Functions

     

    Collaborates with leaders from other state and federal agencies on animal health issues. Recommends animal health legislation and regulations to executive director and assists with animal health programs. Acts as a liaison between the agency and licensed veterinarians and responds to veterinarians and citizens about animal health issues. Monitors the trends of diseases of livestock and poultry and oversees diagnostic and control measures. Acts as liaison with the livestock and poultry industries with educational seminars.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

     

    Knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations and procedures that affect animal health programs. Knowledge of the pertinent livestock and poultry industries (dairy, beef, swine, poultry, sheep, goats). Knowledge of practice of veterinary medicine, including dogs and cats. Ability to advise and provide leadership to executive director regarding animal health issues. Ability to interpret and explain the impact of federal, state, and local laws and regulations on administration of an animal health program Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with state and federal officials and the general public.

    Minimum Qualifications

    The formal education equivalent of a Doctorate degree of Veterinary Medicine; plus seven years of experience in the diagnosis and management of animal diseases in a university, governmental, industrial, or private practice involving livestock and poultry. Must possess Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine, currently be licensed by the Veterinary Medical Examining Board, and a federally Accredited Veterinarian. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
