    Job Description

    The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City’s evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the City towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for our employees, visitors, volunteers and people in our custody. Importantly, safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 7,500 diverse professionals and knowledgeable experts.

     

    The Health Affairs, Quality & Compliance Division is hiring a Forensic Investigator who will be responsible for conducting accurate, thorough, and timely fact-finding investigations of exceptional medical events and deaths of persons in custody. Under general supervision, and as part of a team, the Forensic Investigator will work closely with interdisciplinary team members to provide investigative services and support, establishing and participating in collaborative alliances with various institutional, governmental, healthcare, and oversight entities throughout the entirety of the investigation.

    The selected candidate will be responsible for but not limited to the following:

    - Create an investigation plan for each death in custody independently and conference with facility

     

    leadership and the Special Investigations Division,

     

    - Independently review and detail all relatable discovery documents pertaining to each case

     

    - Participate in, and provide support for, data collection, follow-up investigations, outstanding reports, site

     

    visits

     

    - Maintain an organized case file (hard copy and digital) for each custodial death

     

    - Document, review, and finalize a summary of details and facts pertaining to investigation results

     

    - Maintain a level of sensitivity, discernment, and confidentiality

     

    - Foster a working relationship with internal and external stakeholders.

     

    - Communicate effectively with custodial and healthcare personnel.

     

    - Serve as a liaison with other divisions and City agencies, including the Office of the Chief Medical

     

    Examiner.

     

    - Other duties as assigned.

     

    This role requires on-call availability during off hours for urgent/emergent situations

     

    Preferred Skills

     

    - Minimum of 1 year experience in investigative fieldwork; forensic, behavioral, mortuary sciences.

     

    - Strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite

     

    - Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

     

    - Ability to multi-task and adapt to changing needs and priorities.

    Qualifications

    1. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and four years of satisfactory full-time experience in one or more of the fields of accounting, auditing, correction administration, criminal justice administration and planning, forensic science, inspection, investigation, law enforcement, personnel administration, police science, and security, or in a major operational area of the agency in which the appointment is to be made; or

    2. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college; or

    3. Education and/or experience equivalent to "1" or "2" above.
