    Job Description

    The New York City Department of Probation (DOP) is seeking a Director of Command Level Training to support the Division of Staff and Organizational Development (DSOD) within the Armorer’s Unit. The Director of Command Level Training will be responsible for supervising firearms instructors, developing and implementing training programs that align with legal and agency standards, and ensuring officer safety and proficiency. The position manages range operations, monitors training effectiveness, maintains compliance with safety and regulatory requirements, and coordinates firearms inventory with the Armorer’s Unit.

     

    This position is critical to ensure that all officers who are authorized to carry a firearm are properly trained, meet agency and state standards, and understand firearm safety and use-of-force policies. Please see below for key responsibilities:

     

    - Supervise and coordinate all firearms training activities, including academy instruction, in-service training, annual requalifications, and remedial sessions.

     

    - Oversee a team of firearms instructors, providing direction, support, and performance feedback to ensure consistent and high-quality instruction.

     

    - Develop and implement firearms training curricula, incorporating best practices, legal standards, and emerging technologies such as virtual reality (VR) and tactical scenario-based exercises.

     

    - Ensure all training content aligns with DCJS requirements and agency policies.

     

    - Monitor training outcomes and implement improvements to enhance officer proficiency, safety, and judgment under stress.

     

    - Manage range operations during training, ensuring strict adherence to safety protocols and supervising compliance with all range safety rules.

     

    - Coordinate the inspection, tracking, and secure management of firearms and ammunition inventory in collaboration with the Armorer’s Unit.

     

    - Maintain and audit comprehensive training and qualification records to ensure accuracy and regulatory compliance.

     

    - Serve as a liaison to internal stakeholders and external regulatory bodies on matters related to firearms training standards and practices.

     

    - Evaluate training needs and recommend policy, procedural, or instructional changes to senior leadership.

    Qualifications

    A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and four years of full-time paid experience in counseling or casework in a recognized agency adhering to acceptable standards in probation, parole, social services, psychiatric or medical social work or related field, at least 18 months of which must have been in a responsible supervisory, administrative or consultative capacity performing activities related to the duties of the position; or

    A combination of education and/or experience equivalent to “1” above. However, all candidates must have at least 18 months of experience in an administrative, managerial, executive, consultative, executive capacity or supervising personnel performing activities related to the duties of the position.
