    The Healthcare Interpreter helps people with Limited English Proficient (LEP) communicate clearly with healthcare staff by interpreting spoken in both English and Spanish. They work during patient appointments, both in clinics and hospitals, and may assist in other areas when available.

     

    Key Responsibilities: Provide accurate and clear interpretation in person. Help patients understand the healthcare system and connect with needed resources. Act as a cultural guide to support effective communication between patients and providers. Keep records of interpretation services for billing and tracking. Follow all workplace safety, conduct, and training requirements. Must be able to pass MRI screening when required for specific duties. Work closely with other team members and departments to ensure good care for all patients.

     

    Job Requirements Knowledge of/Skill/Ability to: Demonstrated ability to facilitate clear, accurate, and impartial communication in a professional healthcare setting. Proficient in using telephones, computers, video conferencing platforms, interpretation software, and electronic health record (EHR) systems, as required Extensive knowledge of medical terminology in both English and Spanish. High proficiency in both spoken and written English and Spanish. Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.

     

    License/Certification Must have national certification from either the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI) or Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI) and be in good standing. OHA certification or qualification is required by Oregon law (ORS 413.550), including language proficiency testing and certification or qualification letters with identification numbers from the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) Valid Driver’s License and auto insurance required

     

    Education and/or Experience Completion of an OHA-approved Certified Healthcare Interpreter training program is required. Preferred: 3+ years of experience interpreting in healthcare settings.

     

    Physical Demands and Work Environment Conditions / ADA Compliance Ability to sit, stand, or walk for extended periods, depending on assignment, and to perform effectively in fast-paced, high-pressure healthcare settings. Frequent use of speech, hearing, and concentration may involve repetitive hand movements for notetaking or device operation. Potential exposure to noise, bodily fluids, medical environments, and radiation. Access to MRI environments with magnetic field strengths of up to 3T. Employees must comply with MRI safety protocols and successfully pass MRI safety screening requirements for entry into controlled areas, including but not limited to Zone III and Zone IV.
