Addiction Medicine Physicians are board-certified in another medical specialty prior to meeting requirements for board certification in addiction medicine by the American Board of Preventive Medicine. The Addiction Medicine Specialist functions as part of the Interdisciplinary Pain Management team within the VACCHCS Pain Clinic and will care for patients experiencing concurrent pain and substance use disorders, especially Opioid Use Disorder. The specialist is trained in a wide range of prevention, evaluation, and treatment modalities addressing substance use and pain in ambulatory care, long-term care, and inpatient care settings. This position is majority clinical work, but will include some administrative responsibilities, including supervision of medical trainees, collaboration with advanced practice providers, participation in chart reviews and peer reviews, interdisciplinary case discussions, and quality improvement processes. The incumbent works closely with the Interdisciplinary Pain Management Team to provide comprehensive pain and substance use disorder services consistent with the biopsychosocial model of pain care. The incumbent provides diagnostic assessment, evidence-based treatment interventions, care coordination, and case management that focuses on chronic pain management and health promotion. Major duties include, but are not limited to: Provides continuous veteran centric care as part of the Interdisciplinary Pain Management Team. Duties will include day-to-day care of veterans, at the outpatient and in-patient settings. Responsible for providing the Addiction Medicine component of patient care to patients managed by the Pain clinic and those patients referred for Pain consultation. Diagnoses and treats patients experiencing problems with acute, chronic and cancer related pain who may be at high risk for or may have co-morbid opioid/substance use disorder. Coordinates with Pain Mgt specialist and Interdisciplinary Pain Team. Provider may refer and coordinate seamless transition of care to SUDP, Mental Health programs, Primary Care Provider Clinics, or other specialists as appropriate. Refers to other local, Clinical Resource Hub (CRH) and Interfacility Consult (IFC) services, and other Community Care Services as needed for meeting pain outcomes. Serves as a resource to Primary Care Providers, Pain Management clinicians, other specialty care providers throughout the facility. Active participation in Opioid Safety Initiatives (OSI), Pain Clinic integrated visits, Whole Health and PM&R related programs locally. Involved in local clinical and educational programs and is encouraged to participate in research activities. The incumbent will be involved in the education and training of residents, fellows, medical students, and non-physician providers, clinicians, trainees, as well as participate in grand rounds, lectures and in-services as opportunities allow. Participates in development if Pain management programs, in line with National VHA and local VA initiatives, accountable for programs meeting its target goals and VHA outcomes measures. Works closely with all healthcare professionals throughout VACCHCS, especially WH-Pain Management and SUDP programs, and provides consultations. Participates in quality assurance programs and chart reviews. Complies with all quality performance measures and improvement programs. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Additional Requirement: Board certified with the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) by being board-certified in their field of specialty and board certified in Addiction Medicine. Current BLS provider card issued by American Heart Association (AHA) or Military Training Network (MTN). Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) provider card. Preferred Experience: Preferred experience or training in pain management. Physical Requirements: Must be in overall good health, able to sit at a desk working at a computer, engage in light to moderate physical activity including sitting, walking, bending, and carrying supplies. Applicants must be able to perform primarily light and sedentary duties with occasionally moderate physical demands, exercise patience, and control emotions, with reasonable accommodation if necessary, without endangering the health and safety of the applicant or others. Position requires walking throughout the clinic and the Medical Center, standing for extended periods of time, and involves sitting at a computer and in counsel and consultation with Veterans and interdisciplinary teams. Position may require minimal travel into the community to meet with community agencies and partners who assist and support to the Caregiver Support program, its Veterans and caregivers. This position also requires close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; and repetitive motions of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. Education Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted, or Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. [If the applicant does not claim an ECFMG certificate, facility officials must still confirm that the medical school meets (or met) ECFMG eligibility requirements for the year the candidate graduated.] NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities.
