    Job Title: Financial Counselor

    Summary

    The Veterans Benefits Banking Program (VBBP) is a national initiative led by the Association of Military Banks of America (AMBA), in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The program connects Veterans, survivors, and beneficiaries with safe, secure banking services, financial education, and personalized financial counseling. Through this initiative, participants receive access to qualified financial professionals who provide education, goal setting, and support to improve financial well-being and long-term stability. Counselors play a vital role in delivering these services virtually, with flexibility and cultural sensitivity at the heart of the approach.

     

    The Financial Counselor will deliver virtual, one-on-one financial counseling services to Veterans, survivors, and family members participating in the VBBP. This role supports financial wellness through education, action planning, and referrals when appropriate. Counselors work independently with flexible schedules, utilizing the designated secure platform for all documentation and sessions. Select counselors may also serve as VBBP Ambassadors, conducting outreach workshops or briefings in their local or regional communities to promote the program.

     

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

     

    + Deliver high-quality, confidential financial counseling services virtually, using secure video or audio via the designated secure platform

    + Tailor support to participants' financial goals, including but not limited to budgeting, debt reduction, credit improvement, banking education, and long-term planning

    + Document all session details and participant progress exclusively in secure platform

    + Identify and refer participants to outside resources when needs exceed program scope (e.g., legal/tax help, debt management plans)

    + Maintain confidentiality and adhere to all privacy and data protection protocols

    + Support participant understanding of tools such as VetCents and the bank/credit union finder

    + Complete the required virtual onboarding and periodic training

    + Participate in optional professional development and periodic quality review sessions

    + Represent the program positively and uphold Zeiders’ values of service and cultural competency

    + Represent the program in the community as a VBBP Ambassador (Optional)

    + Other duties as assigned

    Required Qualifications

    + Must be currently working as a Financial Counselor for the Veterans Benefits Banking Program.

    + Possess and maintain national certification as an Accredited Financial Counselor® (AFC®)

    + Two years of relevant experience in financial counseling, coaching, and/or education

    + Strong interpersonal communication skills and a client-centered, empathetic approach

    + Comfortable using virtual platforms, documenting cases electronically, and navigating digital tools

    + Proven ability to work independently in a virtual setting and manage client caseloads responsibly

    + Strong understanding of the unique needs and challenges of the Veteran community

    + Reliable internet connection and access to a personal computer for secure, remote counseling

    + Ability to travel in the U.S. occasionally as needed

    + Must pass a pre-employment background check

    Preferred Qualifications

    + Military affiliation (Veteran, Reserve/National Guard member, military spouse, or military child)

    + Experience working with the Veteran community

    + Prior experience with Client Assistance Network (CAN), LifeCents/VetCents, or similar client support platforms

    + Experience working in a remote or teleservices setting

    + Knowledge of military benefits such as the GI Bill, VA loans, and military retirement systems

    + Public speaking or facilitation skills for outreach events or workshops

    + Physically located in Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, Texas, or Virginia

    + Bilingual with Spanish as a preferred language
