The Director of Residence Life and Facility Manager plays a key role in the day-to-day operations of the Bard NYC dormitory, which hosts students participating in the Bard NYC study away program, as well as students from other colleges and universities. This role encompasses oversight of residence/student life and the student dormitory, including managing student housing, work with residents on conflict resolution, creating social and community-building programming, engaging with students on issues of health and wellness, and general oversight of the dorm facility. The Director of Residence Life and Facility Manager works to foster a supportive educational environment that promotes students’ individual growth, community engagement, and academic achievement. The position requires participation in an on-call rotation and full-time residency in the dormitory.
The Director of Residence Life and Facility Manager reports to the Executive Director of Bard NYC and works closely with the Director of Educational Programs as well as with other Bard College colleagues in New York City and at Bard’s main campus in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York.
Position Overview:
Bard NYC is comprised of a small team of dedicated professionals in New York City, who work closely with colleagues at Bard College’s main campus in Annandale-on-Hudson, NY to deliver quality programming and support the success of students living and studying at Bard NYC. The student community is made up of a mix of undergraduate students from Bard and other institutions participating in the Bard NYC study away program, graduate students in Bard’s MA in Global Studies, and students from other colleges and universities studying or interning in New York City. Most residents spend one to two terms in the dormitory. Bard NYC is housed in Bard’s new student living/learning space in Brooklyn which opened in 2023.
The Bard NYC team works together to ensure student success, with the Director of Residence Life and Facility Manager chiefly responsible for building a student community and helping to support the development of positive and healthy relationships among student residents. They serve, along with the Student Life Coordinator, as an advocate and mentor to dorm residents, engaging with student residents on non-academic issues, including health and wellness and roommate disputes. The position incorporates various aspects of student affairs into one role dedicated to supporting the small and transient student community made up of undergraduate and graduate students from a broad range of US and international institutions.
The Director of Residence Life and Facility Manager works closely with the Executive Director of Bard NYC, building management and the security team to guarantee the smooth and effective running of the residence. This includes ensuring that the facility is properly maintained and security and cleaning protocols are followed, updating protocols and procedures as needed, suggesting upgrades to the space to enhance student experience and managing dormitory supplies.
This position requires a person with energy and creativity, dedicated to working intensively with college students as they adapt and integrate into life in New York City. The Director of Residence Life and Facility Manager supervises a small team of professional and student Res Life staff and works closely with all student residents to promote a safe and healthy living environment. Due to the nature of the position, flexibility with non-traditional hours is imperative. The position includes administrative and office work for Bard NYC. The Director of Residence Life and Facility Manager position is an exciting opportunity to help shape and enhance a dynamic experience for students.
Key responsibilities include:
+ Oversight of a 194-bed dormitory for undergraduate and graduate students, including Bard NYC program participants and other residents from Bard, other colleges and universities
+ Leading the Res Life Office, including supervision of the Student Life Coordinator and student Res Life staff (peer counselors)
+ Work with the Res Life team to manage housing assignments, mediation between roommates, room changes and other aspects of residence life
+ Working to ensure the health and safety of residents including addressing student wellness concerns, providing case management for students in emotional, psychological or medical distress; counseling and referring students to appropriate professional staff members and resources as needed
+ Management of and participation in the on-call rotation and assisting with after-hours emergency/crisis situations
+ Working with the Student Life Coordinator and other team members on organizing and running social and community-building programming in the dormitory and local community, as well as other events in the dormitory
+ Holding office hours for student residents and working closely with them on various non-academic concerns, including providing guidance and support, in particular with helping students adjust to living in New York City and, in some cases, the United States
+ Selection, training, and supervision of student Peer Counselors (RAs)
+ Oversee student move-in/move-out
+ Leading dormitory orientation
+ Management of dormitory reservations
+ General oversight of the Brooklyn facility, including dorm floors and student rooms, the common kitchen, dining room, laundry room, student lounge, patio, and seminar rooms
+ Work with the Executive Director and building management on issues concerning housekeeping, maintenance, security, tech, pest control and other areas of facility operations
+ Inventorying and coordinating with the business office on dorm supplies
+ Building policy, procedure, and systems and implementing these systems to ensure a seamless student housing experience and running of the facility
+ Basic financial and office management
+ Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
+ Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred, in residence life/student affairs or related field
+ At least five years of work experience; 4-5 years progressive professional experience in residence life, student affairs, or management of study away/study abroad programming
+ Experience overseeing residential, educational and/or other facilities
+ Excellent interpersonal and human relations skills, written and verbal communication skills
+ Efficient time management skills with experience managing multiple priorities, multitasking, and meeting deadlines
+ Experience in event planning and management
+ Outstanding organizational and administrative capabilities
+ Ability to work independently and with limited supervision as well as work effectively within a team environment and with student leadership
+ Ability to both manage details and see the big picture of programs and projects
+ Strong working knowledge of New York City
+ Must be able to work within a department that values initiative, strong work ethic, and teamwork
+ A commitment to student advocacy and an interest in daily interaction with a variety of creative and independent students is a must
+ Full-time residency in the Bard NYC dormitory is required
Compensation:$72,000-$77,000; full-time, 12-month, live-in exempt position
Compensation includes salary, accommodation in the Williamsburg residence, work cell phone, professional development opportunities, benefits package including health benefits, paid vacation after the first year, and retirement plan after two years.
This salary range reflects the College's good faith and reasonable estimate of the compensation for the position at the time of the job posting. Salary decisions are dependent on several factors including but not limited to market and organizational considerations, experience, and qualifications of a selected candidate as well as internal and external equity.

Bard NYC is semester-long experiential learning undergraduate study-away program in New York City, which pairs academic study with professional internships. A semester combines 12-16 credits in a wide array of courses, including a core-seminar, with an internship of up to 20 hours per week.
