    Posting is for one Transportation Worker III in Asheboro Bridge Maintenance. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of bridges, pipes, and culverts in Randolph County. Must have ability to operate assigned equipment safely and possess knowledge of use and care of assigned equipment, hand tools, and power tools. Ability to perform carpentry and concrete work and operate heavy equipment such as Lattice Crane, Excavator, Backhoe, Truck Mounted Crane, Truck Platform, Trailer Platform, Tandem Dump Truck, Front End Loader, and Skid Steer. General skills include but are not limited to: placing and tying reinforcing steel, pipe installation, demolition work, torch cutting w/acetylene torch, drill, cut steel, transporting materials by truck & trailer, and basic surveying. Employee must be able to follow oral and written instructions as directed by supervisor, perform work zone operations, and assist with snow and ice operations. Work may include lifting up to 50lbs repeatedly and exerting up 100lbs of force occasionally and may be performed while suspended at moderate heights, confined areas, or over water/in water. Employee must have ability to climb, bend, traverse steep and uneven terrain, and work in extreme temperature conditions. May require work during nontraditional work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays. Position is subject to emergency call back.

     

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

    Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

    + Experience in pipe installation and installation of erosion control devices

    + Experience in the layout of traffic control in work zones

    + Working knowledge of standard bridge maintenance and construction procedures

    + Experience in operating at least 1 of the following pieces of Bridge Category “D” equipment: Lattice Crane, Rubber Tire Excavator, Track Excavator, Tug Boat

    + Experience constructing formwork using skilled carpentry techniques

    Additional Expectations:

    The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Safety toe footwear is required.

     

    Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

    High school or General Educational Development diploma and five years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
