    REPORTS TO: Building Principal

     

    FLSA STATUS: Exempt

     

    STATUS: Full Time, Salary

    BASIC FUNCTION:

    Help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their musical knowledge and abilities in a safe, productive and well-organized education program that aims to benefit all students.

    SPECIFICATIONS/QUALIFICATIONS:

    + Bachelors degree or higher in Education from an accredited college or university.

    + Valid Iowa teaching license with appropriate endorsements.

    + Successful student teaching and/or prior teaching experience.

    + Completion of Child Abuse Reporting Training.

    + Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

    TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

    + 188-Day Contract.

    + The VSCSD Board of Directors in negotiation with the VSEA establishes salary & work year.

     

    EVALUATION: The Building Principal evaluates the performance of this job.

    GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

    + Adhere to applicable state and federal laws, rules and regulations, board policies and administrative rules.

    + Demonstrate organization and professionalism in fulfilling the responsibilities of the position.

    + Maintain a “service orientation” and treat all students, parents, staff, and visitors with professional courtesy.

    + Demonstrate a positive attitude toward school, students and job while communicating the same to the community.

    + Attend seminars, trainings, classes, and professional development as needed to stay current with state and federal regulations and requirements and maintain licensure.

    + Dress appropriately for the position and work required.

    + Accept constructive criticism and suggestions while seeking to improve each performance responsibility.

    + Maintain professionalism related to confidentiality of student records and the school operation.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    + Instruct students in music theory, harmony, score and sight-reading, composition, music appreciation, and provides individual or group vocal or instrumental lessons.

    + Sing or play instrument to demonstrate musical scales, tones, and rhythm.

    + Evaluate student’ interests, aptitudes, temperament, and individual characteristics to determine suitable instrument for beginner (instrumental music).

    + Plan a balanced music program and organize daily classroom work based on teaching outline prepared for course of study to meet curriculum requirements and so that preparation, rehearsal, and instruction can be accomplished within the allotted time.

    + Provide individual and small-group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil.

    + Evaluate each pupil’s musical growth and performance, assessing each individual’s contribution to the performance of the group.

    + Use repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary, that are appropriate for the ages and skill levels of pupils.

    + Cooperate with the school administration in providing musical programs for school productions, graduation ceremonies, and civic functions.

    + Plan, rehearse, direct and coach pupils in their individual parts, in fundamentals of musicianship, and ensemble performance.

    + Lead orchestra or choral groups in regular and special performances for school program, community activities, concerts, and festivals.

    + Establish and maintains standards of pupil behavior to provide an orderly, productive environment during practice, group rehearsals, and musical performances.

    + Critique performance to identify errors and reinforce correct techniques.

    + Supervise pupils in out-of-classroom activities as assigned. Accompany students on field trips to musical performances.

    + Select and requisition books, musical instruments, and instructional aids; maintain required inventory records. Order, store, and inventory musical instruments, music, and supplies.

    + Communicate and meet with parents and school counselors on pupil progress and to resolve any student problems.

    + Identify pupil needs and cooperate with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems.

    + Control the storage and use of school-owned property; make minor adjustments and requests repairs to instruments as required.

    + Participate in curriculum and other developmental programs.

    + Participate in faculty committees and sponsorship of pupil activities.

    + Maintain professional competence through in-service education provided by the district, and in self-selected professional growth activities related to music.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    + Able to communicate effectively via a telephone and email in a clear, precise manner.

    + Able to write and record reports utilizing basic computer functions.

    + Able to climb stairs or stand and walk for extended periods of time.

    + Able to sit, reach, carry, push, bend body at waist, bend both knees, twist, and stoop while handling items.

    + Able to read and interpret policies, procedures and employee handbook.

    + Occasionally lift up to 25 pounds using proper lifting techniques.

    + Able to hear and speak in order to communicate with students, parents, co-workers, and supervisors.

    WORKING CONDITIONS:

    + Primary work setting is the Assigned Attendance Center but duties at times may require working within various attendance centers in the district or accompanying students to special events.

    + Will be required to ride a school bus or drive school vehicles to carry out responsibilities of the position.

    + Will be required to work additional hours as required for special events or during certain times of the year.
