    The State of Connecticut Military Department (CTMD) (https://portal.ct.gov/MIL) is accepting applications for a Airport Crash Rescue Firefighter (https://www.jobapscloud.com/CT/specs/classspecdisplay.asp?ClassNumber=0180PS&LinkSpec=RecruitNum2&R1=&R3=) position located at the CT Air National Guard at Bradley International Airport in East Granby, CT. This position is full-time, with rotating 24/48-hour schedules. Please note Special Requirements section for the Connecticut Air National Guard, Military Department.

    POSITION HIGHLIGHTS:

    + Full-Time, with rotating 24/48 hour schedules.

    PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

    At the Connecticut Airport Authority, Bradley International Airport and the Military Department, Connecticut Air National Guard Base this class is accountable for the performance of firefighting and crash rescue functions, provision of emergency medical services, fire prevention inspections and activities and hazardous materials responses.

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

    Incumbents in this class serve as a member of a fire team on an assigned shift and function in the following areas:

    FIREFIGHTING AND RESCUE:

    + Acts as first responder to fire, medical and hazardous materials incidents;

    + Evaluates nature and severity of incidents, selects appropriate tools and techniques and activates appropriate type of water, chemical and/or foam spray;

    + Drives apparatus to emergency scene in event of alarm;

    + Receives on-the-job training in structural (including high rise) firefighting and various technical rescue procedures;

    + Performs related duties as required.

    EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES:

    + As a first responder to medical incidents evaluates medical condition of patient;

    + Provides temporary treatment and/or critical intervention for injuries;

    + Communicates with area hospitals for guidance;

    + Transports patient to hospital if necessary;

    + Provides rescue services within designated area;

    + May be required to serve as a paramedic on scene;

    + Performs related duties as required.

    FIRE PREVENTION:

    + Conducts routine inspection tours of facilities to check and/or maintain alarm boxes, hydrants, smoke and heat detectors, fire extinguishers, sprinkler systems and foam systems;

    + Reports any dangerous or inadequate conditions;

    + Designs escape routes;

    + May conduct special investigations or present fire prevention training seminars;

    + Performs related duties as required.

    EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE:

    + Performs daily maintenance and checking of personal equipment to ensure readiness for emergency situations;

    + Examines apparatus to ensure adequate levels of gasoline, oil, water, foam and chemicals;

    + Performs operational checks of apparatus and pumps;

    + Ensures ambulance and emergency rescue vehicle are stocked with necessary equipment and medical supplies;

    + Maintains all bio-hazard equipment;

    + Performs related duties as required.

    COMMUNICATIONS:

    + Serves as dispatcher;

    + Checks and tests radios and alarms;

    + Maintains communication log;

    + Performs related duties as required.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

    + Knowledge of

    + firefighting, fire prevention and crash rescue techniques as applied to airports and aircraft crash situations;

    + emergency medical techniques;

    + fire inspection and prevention techniques;

    + hazardous materials and instrumentation;

    + fire codes;

    + Skills

    + interpersonal skills;

    + oral and written communication skills;

    + Ability to

    + evaluate emergency situations and develop effective courses of action;

    + work under pressure;

    + prepare reports;

    + utilize computer software.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

    National certification by the National Board of Fire Service Professional Qualifications (NPQS) or the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or state certification by the Connecticut Fire Academy that meet the provisions of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Firefighter 2.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

    Successful completion of prescribed training and probationary requirements set forth in the class of Protective Services Trainee.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    Preference will be given to individuals with the following certifications that are IFSAC and/or Pro Board accredited:

    + Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations (IFSAC and/or Pro Board accredited)

    + Airport Firefighter (IFSAC and/or Pro Board accredited)

    + National Registry Emergency Medical Technician or State of Connecticut Emergency Medical Technician

    + Driver Operator Pumper (IFSAC and/or Pro Board accredited)

    + Driver Operator ARFF (IFSAC and/or Pro Board accredited)

    + Driver Operator Mobile Water Supply (IFSAC and/or Pro Board accredited)

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

    + Incumbents in this class must have reached their 18th birthday.

    + Incumbents in this class must possess and retain Hazardous Materials Operational level certification.

    + Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification or Paramedic license.

    CONNECTICUT AIR NATIONAL GUARD, MILITARY DEPARTMENT:

    + Incumbents in this class must maintain membership in the Connecticut Air National Guard for at least six (6) years after being hired and may be required to attend Air Force Firefighting School within six (6) months of hire.

    + Incumbents in this class must possess and retain Department of Defense security clearance.

    + Incumbents in this class will be required to complete required training in accordance with the Department of Defense Instruction 6055.6-M within one (1) year of appointment to the classification.

    + Incumbents in this class will be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license with proper endorsements and a valid Military Operator’s license.

    CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS

    In addition to the checking of references and of facts stated in the application, a thorough background investigation of each candidate will be made before persons are certified for appointment.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    + Incumbents in this class must possess general good health, be free from any disease or injury which would impair health or usefulness and possess and retain sufficient physical strength, stamina, agility, endurance and visual and auditory acuity required to perform all the duties of the class.

    + Applicants may be required to pass a physical examination.

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    Incumbents in this class may be exposed to a moderate amount of lifting equipment, danger of injury or loss of life during firefighting and crash rescue operations and handling of hazardous materials, significant mental stress of responding to life and death emergencies and to strongly disagreeable conditions including exposure to weather, loud noises and hazardous materials.
