The primary role of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations. This position requires proficiency in blood draws, specimen labeling, centrifuging, recording maintenance data, decontamination, and updating patient information.
Responsibilities
+ Perform blood draws and label specimens accurately.
+ Centrifuge specimens and record maintenance data.
+ Decontaminate work areas and update patient information.
+ Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
+ Explain the process of venipuncture and other specimen collections clearly and courteously.
+ Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and butterfly needles.
+ Fully understand all physicians' orders.
+ Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
+ Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order.
+ Check all test requisitions or computer labels against script for accuracy.
+ Package specimens for transport.
Essential Skills
+ Proficiency in specimen collection and phlebotomy.
+ Ability to perform blood draws on all types of patients.
+ Experience with hard sticks and needles, urine, and thyroid testing.
+ Strong data entry skills and attention to detail.
+ Computer literacy.
+ Experience in hospital, ER, or urgent care settings.
+ Customer service skills.
+ Phlebotomy certification.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
+ High School Diploma or GED required.
+ 1-2 years of experience needed.
+ Experience with geriatric patients is preferred.
Work Environment
The position is based in a medium-sized doctor's office. The phlebotomist will be expected to handle between 15-20 draws daily and stand for the majority of their shift. While working alone, collaboration with other employees is also expected. The role requires 8 am to 4:30 pm shifts from Monday to Friday, with opportunities for growth and development in a supportive environment.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $20.00/hr.
