    Job Description

    The Medical Lab Scientist I in the Special Chemistry Department will be responsible for testing assigned specimens. This role involves sample extraction using manual pipetting techniques, Tecan automated technology, and conducting manual data review of calibrations, QC, and chromatography. The scientist will follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting, and maintaining records of patient test results. Proficiency testing samples must be tested in the same manner as patient specimens, and the results will be analyzed using approved testing procedures. Test results will be reviewed and released in accordance with CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, and safety guidelines.

    Responsibilities

    + Conduct sample extraction using manual pipetting techniques and Tecan automated technology.

    + Perform manual data review of calibrations, quality control, and chromatography.

    + Follow laboratory procedures for specimen handling, processing, test analyses, reporting, and maintaining records of patient test results.

    + Maintain records demonstrating proficiency testing samples are tested similarly to patient specimens.

    + Analyze specimens using approved testing procedures and review and release test results.

    + Adhere to CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, and safety guidelines.

    + Follow laboratory policies when test systems are not within acceptable performance levels.

    + Identify and correct problems affecting test performance or reporting, or notify technologist or supervisor.

    Essential Skills

    + Proficiency in chemistry, clinical laboratory, CLIA regulations, and pipetting techniques.

    + Experience with medical laboratory procedures, gas chromatography, and liquid chromatography.

    Additional Skills & Qualifications

    + Degree in Chemistry with 25+ credits in Chemistry courses, including analytical and instrumental courses (Requirement for CLIA).

    + 1 year of clinical lab experience is a plus.

    + Experience with HPLC, GCMS, LCMS, research, pharmaceuticals, or toxicology.

    Work Environment

    The position is located in a very busy clinical lab environment with rotational weekends. The working hours are Sunday through Thursday, from 4 pm to 12:30 am, and include a 10% shift differential for the evening shift and a 15% weekend differential.
