Description
The City of Norfolk's Downtown branch at Slover invites applications for a Full-time Library Assistant I position to join our Circulation Team. Success in this position draws on the incumbent’s competencies in advocating an inclusive and diverse library environment, nurturing safe and accessible library spaces, and embracing innovative processes and technologies that enhance library operations.
Primary responsibilities of this position are assisting the public with circulation processes, including registration and processing of new accounts, charging and discharging of library materials, cash handling for both library fees and retail transactions, and running various library collection reports.
The Slover is a beautiful venue and multi-use facility in downtown Norfolk with a mission to be a premier destination for residents and visitors to enjoy. The Slover will support a thriving downtown by encouraging tourism, providing resources for entrepreneurs, and housing the downtown branch library at The Slover.
Departmental Hiring Salary Range: $40,688-$46,791
Essential Functions
Essential functions include but are not limited to:
Collection Circulation;
+ Maintain an active, visible, and welcoming presence at multiple service points including the Circulation desk, and throughout the building as a roving assistant; assist staff and patrons with resolving account issues.
+ Performs circulation activities by checking materials in and out, reserving material requests, registering new patrons, coordinating interlibrary loans and collecting fees.
+ Process new library patron accounts; enter, maintain, and retrieve accurate patron data in database.
+ Coordinate with team on all opening and closing procedures.
Collection Processing:
+ Assist Collection Processing team staff with checking in and moving materials to designated locations in the building, as needed
+ Must be able to sit/stand for extended periods of time, lifts up to 25 pounds from ground to waist-level, bend, stoop, push, pull, and complete tasks requiring manual dexterity to retrieve books and other materials from shelves/cabinets ranging in height from floor level to approximately 6 feet, and unpack incoming books/orders.
+ Assist with other Processing room tasks, as needed.
Financial:
+ Collect library fines and fees, and related routine money handling tasks; resolve errors and report issues immediately to Circulation Supervisor.
+ Process retail transactions as required.
Other:
+ Report and resolve collection circulation and related financial matters under the direction of the Circulation Supervisor, as needed.
+ Provides customer service by providing assistance with computers and equipment, searching database for information and resources and recommending reading material.
+ Assists with the maintenance of the branch’s library space and collection.
+ Ability to relate library services to the needs of the community.
+ Ability to maintain effective working relationships with the public and other employees.
+ Perform other duties, as assigned.
Education/Experience
Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with six months/one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency. Junior college, vocational, business, technical or correspondence schools are likely sources. Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training.
•Six months of experience in a library and/or a related service-oriented field, including routine money handling tasks, serving patrons, and receiving and processing collection materials.
•Novice proficiency using SirsiDynix Symphony Workflows and/or similar integrated library systems (ILS) such as for entering and managing patron and collection information and generating reports.
•Novice proficiency with Hoopla, Libby, and/or related digital library platforms such as for guiding patrons on basic use, accessing eBooks and other digital resources, and basic troubleshooting.
Additional Information & Requirements
Work Hours: This position is 40 hours per week. The facility will be open Monday 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Tuesday-Thursday 9 a.m.-7 p.m. and Friday-Saturday 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Weekend and evening hours will be required.
Signing Bonus: This position is eligible for a one-time $5000 sign on bonus.

+ Special project/grant employees are generally eligible for the same benefits of regular full-time employees; however, retirement, life insurance and participation in health plans vary depending upon funding and authorization.
+ Temporary/seasonal and part-time employees are generally only eligible for employer provided parking and access to membership in credit union.
+ Retirement
If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
+ The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
