    This position will serve as an Environmental Science Educator for Cornell Cooperative Extension Association of Nassau County (CCE-NC) and will implement existing CCE-NC environmental educational programming and activities at East Meadow Farm (EMF) and throughout Nassau County. Program topics include but are not limited to: agriculture, garden based learning, horticulture, 4-H classes and programs, marine and environmental science. The Environmental Sciences Educator will deliver research-based programs utilizing existing curriculum and resources at East Meadow Farm (EMF) and throughout Nassau County. This position will also coordinate assigned administrative aspects of the Program and will assist the Supervisor with marketing efforts for programming. This position will also assist with other miscellaneous projects/duties that need to be completed at EMF and other duties as needed.

    Required Qualifications:

    + Associate’s Degree or equivalent education (GED/High School Diploma and one (1) year of transferrable program/functional experience).

    + Experience relevant to the role of the position.

    + Valid New York State Driver’s License and the ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.

    + Ability to work flexible hours which may include evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate.

    + Coursework or experience in education and teaching to youth audiences.

    + Ability to clearly communicate (speak, read and write proficiently) in English.

    + Ability to present effective educational lessons to target audiences and work with youth audiences of all ages.

    + Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

    + Ability and willingness to work with diverse audiences and maintain cultural sensitivity.

    + Ability to initiate, plan, organize, implement, teach, and evaluate educational programs.

    + Strong interpersonal and public relations skills with proven ability to work effectively with advisory boards and committees, community and funding partners.

    + Basic computer and word processing skills.

    + Physical ability to demonstrate environmental garden based education techniques, especially digging soil, regularly stooping and kneeling, ability to carry 20 lbs. (soil, tools).

    + Ability to communicate effectively through verbal, written and visual channels using traditional methods and educational tool, as well as electronic technology (e.g., video, audio, computers, etc.).

    + Ability to utilize program resources from the organization and the community.

    + Ability to relate effectively to co-workers, advisors, community and professional leaders.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    + Ability to plan and organize personal work responsibilities according to priorities developed with the immediate supervisor.

    Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

    Program Responsibilities:

    Program Delivery, Evaluation and Applied Research - 80%

     

    + Utilize established program resources and materials in program work.

    + Teach existing programming to include, but not limited to: agriculture, garden based learning, 4-H programs, horticulture, marine and environmental science.

    + Assist in the creation of lesson plans.

    + Under the direction and oversight of the Supervisor, adapt lesson plans and materials as needed to meet established program objectives.

    + Implement lesson plans in region with multicultural needs using current and approved curricula and supplemental materials, and tailor appropriate programming based on identified participant needs as applicable.

    + Utilizing established materials, serve as subject matter resource in the area of environmental science, natural resources, horticulture, marine ecology and bay/wetlands to participants, staff and the general public.

    + Deliver high quality educational programming to individuals and groups that address local, regional, and statewide programming priorities.

    + Collaborate with New York Sea Grant community agencies as requested or required to facilitate related programs and activities.

    + Assist with implementing environmental program initiatives, such as community and school gardens, classes at EMF, 4-H classes and programs, bay/wetland and marine ecology.

    + Assist in multi-association team efforts to deliver the Marine Program and other EMF environmental science programs.

    + Represent CCE before the public, participants, community leaders, government officials, Cornell or other land grant universities in a professional manner as part of program delivery.

    + Serve as a team member and cooperate with the entire Association and Youth and Family Program staff to achieve Association program delivery goals.

    + Implement program evaluation as designed.

    + Assist in the interaction with program participants, advisory committees, Cornell program specialists and faculty, county and community leaders to obtain evaluation data for programs.

    + Assist in the communication of evaluation results and findings as directed.

    + Make recommendations for improvement/changes to strengthen and improve programmatic offerings.

    Administrative Responsibilities:

    Management - 5%

     

    + Provide low-complexity administrative management of established educational program goals.

    + Assist in identifying and recommending program needs (i.e. program supplies and materials) to the Supervisor.

    + Assist in solving problems and resolving conflicts that arise within the program utilizing appropriate policies and procedures.

    + Assist with volunteer involvement and provide guidance to volunteers as assigned and in accordance with established policies and procedures.

     

    Coordination/Operation - 10%

     

    + Utilize existing program materials to recruit the targeted number of both adult and youth participants in the 4-H programs, environmental science programs and Marine Programs.

    + Organize and coordinate 4-H programs, environmental science programs and marine program activities to support delivery of established program goals.

    + Submit accurate program related expense receipts in a timely manner.

    + Provide administrative support for the 4-H programs, environmental science programs and marine program including, but not limited to: preparing correspondence, maintaining files, maintaining participant records, etc. ensuring confidentiality of all information.

    + Assist in providing marketing materials in the promotion of 4-H programs, environmental science programs and marine programming efforts to include, but not limited to: print media, news media, social media, multi-media efforts and the environmental change initiative in collaboration with other nutrition educators.

    + Complete reports, as requested.

    + Accurately collect and prepare paperwork as required for the program evaluation process.

    + Assist in providing existing information to bring awareness to the public in the form of impact statements, articles for progress/annual reports, etc.

    + Transport program materials and resources necessary for performing position responsibilities.

    + Effectively maintain existing professional relationships with other agencies, organizations and businesses that promote effective communication and facilitate continued programming efforts.

     

    Professional Improvement and Other Duties as Assigned - 5%

     

    + In cooperation with Supervisor and/or Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes and Association priorities.

    + Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned.

     

    Health and Safety - Applies to all duties and functions

     

    + Support the Association to maintain a safe working environment.

    + Be familiar with and strive to follow any applicable federal, state, local regulations, Association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement and standard.

    + Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.

    POSITION DETAILS:

    This position is a part-time, non-exempt position, 12 hours per week. The hourly rate for this position is $19.21 - $21.00, commensurate with experience.
