DPWES is a diverse, nationally accredited and award-winning public works agency with approximately 1,000 employees providing solid waste, capital facility development, wastewater, stormwater, urban forestry, and land acquisition management services for the most populous county in Virginia.
Under general supervision responsibilities include:
+ Transports wastewater residuals i.e., sludge, ash, grease, grit, and rages within the county or on state roads using load lugger or tandem trucks for disposal.
+ Maintains vehicles in a clean and safe manner, performs daily maintenance checks, and monitors vehicle repairs that may be required.
+ Keeps a daily record of loads hauled and miles driven.
+ Must be capable of loading and unloading trucks in close areas.

NOTE: The appointee to this position is subject to emergency callback 24 hours a day/seven days a week (24/7) to respond to snow, flood, and other emergencies requiring division resources.
*A $2,500 signing bonus is available to new county employees hired in the Heavy Equipment Operator position. Applicants must possess a valid CDL at time of application submission to be eligible.
Employment Standards
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to completion of the tenth grade; plus three years of experience operating motorized equipment and/or semi-tractor trailers, as appropriate.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
+ Valid driver's license.
+ Class "B" commercial driver's license (CDL).
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, driving record check, and a medical examination to the satisfaction of the employer prior to appointment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
+ 4 years of experience operating heavy motorized equipment in an industrial setting.
+ 3 years of experience performing routine inspections and maintenance of trucks
+ Confined Space Entry Certification
+ Intermediate level of experience using computers systems related to Microsoft Office, GPS, and an asset management program.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to lift 50-75 pounds in a safe and correct manner. Ability to work outside in harsh environments such as extreme heat and cold. Must be able to bend, stoop and stand for prolonged periods of time. Work from elevated areas and in confined spaces. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
SELECTION PROCEDURE:
