Summary You will serve as a CHEMIST in the Scientific Services Division of the Quality Assurance Department of TRIDENT REFIT FACILITY, BANGOR. Salaries: GS-11: $83,104 - $108,029 GS-12: $99,606 - $129,494 Responsibilities You will serve as a senior chemist and lead in technical projects. You will perform troubleshooting of processes, as well as develop new processes to improve quality and/or reduce the time of processing. You will perform analyses on advanced test equipment using techniques. You will perform complex chemical, mechanical, and physical analysis on a diverse range of materials. You will provide technical guidance to production, engineering, or other scientific organizations within and outside the command. You will evaluate changes in testing protocols and its impact on existing procedures. You will determine if existing equipment and methods can be modified to meet new testing criteria. Initiates necessary changes and validates modifications or new procedures to produce reliable results. You will perform data analysis and reduction to convert instrument response into reportable parameters using complex calculations. You will prepare analysis reports summarizing testing results, conformance of a tested material to the requested specification, and any opinions, interpretations, or recommendations, as appropriate. You will provide training, oversees qualification, certify completion of training elements, and perform technical review of work performed by lower-graded engineers and scientists. You will perform statistical analysis of study results to determine sensitivity, selectivity, precision, bias, and uncertainty and compare results of studies to routine customer requests to judge suitability of the method for the intended use. You will prepare detailed reports of validation parameters for laboratory management approval. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications For GS-12: In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: as a professional chemist evaluating data collected through investigations, testing, analysis, and interpretation of the chemical properties of materials to recommend and develop improved techniques and methods for sample collection and preparation to maintain shipyard compliance requirements. For GS-11: In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: as a professional chemist performing chemical analysis of materials using laboratory instruments, methods and techniques to ensure or recommend compliance for shipyard occupational health and safety programs. Education Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics. OR Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education. GS-11: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree. ~OR~ Completion of an equivalent doctoral degree.
