Summary This position is located within the Laboratory Department of the Clinical Services section at the Woodrow Wilson Keeble Memorial Health Care Center (WWKMHCC), Sisseton, South Dakota. The incumbent serves as a Medical Technician and is responsible for the application, modification and adaptation of analytical methods and procedures in the performance of a variety of tests/examinations of human tissue, fluids and/or other substances in the clinical laboratory. Responsibilities Performs a variety of clinical laboratory tests/examinations as requested by medical staff for use in clinical diagnosis, patient screening, and monitoring patient therapy. Performs preventative maintenance, periodic inspection and performance testing of equipment and instruments with the maintenance of appropriate records. Withdraws appropriate quantities of blood by vein punctures and capillary puncture, instructs patients and/or hospital personnel in the collection process of the specimen. Prepares solutions, stains, reagents and media required for the conduct of tests/examinations. Qualifications To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): Medical Technician Series 0645 (opm.gov) Specialized Experience For positions at GS-4 and above: (a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below- MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: (GS-7) A thorough understanding and extensive knowledge of the methods, techniques and practices appropriate to medical technology and their practical application to clinical laboratory work. Skill in calibrating and operating analytical instruments sufficient to independently perform recurring tests and analyses. Understanding of related disciplines such as microbiology, chemistry, physiology, anatomy and their relationship to medical technology. NOTE: Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-7. Two full years of graduate education or a master's degree meets the requirements for GS-9. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. Additional Information Per IHS policy (SGM 21-04) IHS selectees to positions located in Federally operated hospitals, health centers, and clinics must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 before entry on duty or have IHS approve a medical or religious exemption. Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. This position is covered by a Bargaining Unit. The work requires regular and recurrent standing to perform tests, walking between the different sections of the laboratory and reaching and bending to obtain supplies and operate instruments. Occasionally lifts 30/40 pound containers of liquid reagent.
